The Vanguard C420 — more properly the Club 420 — is a 13foot fiberglass doublehanded dinghy that Christian Maury designed for Vanguard Sailboats and that the builder introduced in 1993 as a youthoriented, slightly modified version of the International 420 anchor. Conceived specifically for American highschool and collegiate training and racing, it has since become the dominant doublehanded youth trainer in North America, with active fleets at virtually every U.S. program from California to New England and more than 6,000 boats built.

Vanguard C420 Buyer's Guide

The Vanguard C420, introduced by Vanguard Sailboats in 1993 as a youth-oriented take on the International 420, is the dominant double-handed trainer in North American schools and colleges, with more than 6,000 built and fleets from California to New England. For a buyer scanning the brokerage market, that institutional saturation is the headline: used examples are plentiful because programs cycle fleets constantly, and the active Club 420 Association sustains a large secondary market.

Layouts on the Used Market

Every C420 shares the same 13-foot fiberglass hull and simplified rig — a single crew trapeze wire and a gennaker on a fixed bowsprit rather than a symmetric spinnaker. There is no variation in hull length or planing performance across the class; the one-design rule keeps the boat identical whether it came from a high-school program or a private owner. The jib dimensions (luff 11.08 ft, foot 5.33 ft, area 27.54 ft²) are fixed by class measurement, so layout differences between used boats are limited to condition and sail age rather than configuration.

Equipment and Common Upgrades

Because the class is strict one-design, the used market does not reward heavy customization. The gennaker-on-bowsprit setup is standard, and the single trapeze is the only wire carried. Buyers should focus less on added gear and more on whether the original simplified rig — no spinnaker pole, no second trapeze — is intact and class-legal. Any deviations from the measured jib or hull spec should be treated as a compliance problem rather than an upgrade.

What to Inspect

The C420 is durable and lightweight with a 100 kg (220 lb.) minimum, so inspection should center on the class-standard fiberglass hull and the wear points of a trainer: trapeze wire and fitting fatigue, bowsprit and gennaker hardware, and jib luff/foot/leech edges against the measured 27.54 ft² sail plan. Confirm the hull remains the unmodified 4.2-meter planing form, since the boat's value depends on one-design conformity anchor.

Availability and Buyer's Takeaway

The typical market for used C420s is the United States, where school and collegiate fleets concentrate. For a shopper, the takeaway is straightforward:

  • Verify class-legal rig (single trapeze, gennaker bowsprit, no spinnaker pole)
  • Check trapeze and bowsprit hardware for program-use fatigue
  • Confirm jib measures to class spec (27.54 ft² area)
  • Prefer boats with active fleet or association history for resale continuity
