The Supercat 17 represents a pivotal chapter in the evolution of performance beach catamarans, emerging in the late 1970s as a more accessible, yet still formidable, alternative to the dominant racing cats of the era. Designed by the visionary Bill Roberts and initially produced under the Formulae Racing Sailboats banner, the Supercat 17 was part of a lineage that eventually found its permanent home with Aquarius Sail Inc. in Minnesota. Unlike many of its contemporaries that relied on daggerboards for lift, the Supercat 17 utilized a sophisticated hull shape and highbuoyancy bows to achieve stability and speed. It was designed to bridge the gap between the ultralightweight Supercat 15 and the powerhouse Supercat 19 and 20 models, offering a platform that was manageable for a solo sailor while remaining optimized for a crew of two.
