Regina sailboats: one Orust yard's name across three owners
Regina sailboats are Carl Beyer-designed deck-saloon cruisers - the 35, 38, 43 and 49, built between 1997 and 2005 - that carry the name of the Orust, Sweden yard where they were built: Regina af Vindö Yachts AB, later marketed in the US as Regina Yachts, the name under which the Regina 38 reached American buyers as a Swedish import. The yard sits on ground the historic Vindö boatbuilder once occupied, and editorial coverage has described the boats as building "in the wake of the Vindös" - but the same coverage is explicit that the resemblance ends at geography and the name: "there is nothing left of the old long keel tradition, only the name." Regina's deck-saloon line is its own design story, not a continuation of Vindö's.
Origins and ownership
Regina operated independently until early 2012, when production of the Regina af Vindö deck-saloon yachts passed to CR Yachts, its neighbor on the Orust yard grounds. By one trade account, the takeover made the combined company one of the largest Scandinavian deck-saloon-yacht manufacturers. The lineup itself didn't change hands empty-handed: at the time, it comprised five models spanning 35 to 49 feet, and their designs carried over unchanged under CR Yachts. Winter storage and service stayed put at the original Regina Yachts premises, still run by owners Ove and Mikael Rexander, who around the same time turned the site into an official X-Yachts Sweden service point.
A second transition followed in November 2017, when CR Yachts and Regina of Vindö Yachts joined Sweden Yachts and Malö Yachts to form the Sweden Yachts Group. Production and employees moved to the Malö shipyard at Kungsviken, also on Orust, where Sweden Yachts' own boats were already built; the Regina 43 was among the models still in production there after the move.
Construction through the eras
Documentation is thin on construction specifics, but what survives points to straightforward fiberglass building: the Regina 43's hull is fiberglass, and the Regina 38's interior joinery is finished throughout in various shades of mahogany.
Who Regina is for
A buyer drawn to the Regina name is buying into Carl Beyer's deck-saloon cruisers as they passed through three ownership chapters on the same stretch of Orust coastline - first independent, then under CR Yachts from 2012, then folded into the wider Sweden Yachts Group from 2017. The site's older Vindö associations are worth knowing but not worth conflating with Regina's own, separate design history.
