The Nacra 5.8 stands as a pivotal milestone in the evolution of highperformance beach catamarans, representing a bridge between the experimental designs of the mid1970s and the refined racing machines of the modern era. Developed by Tom Roland in the early 1980s under the Performance Catamarans banner, the 5.8 was engineered to provide a more powerful and stable alternative to the thendominant Hobie 18 and Nacra’s own 5.2. While the earlier 5.2 was known for its plumb bows and agility, the 5.8 introduced a 19foot hull with significantly increased volume and a more traditional, sweptback bow profile designed to handle heavier sea states and higher crew weights. This model became the backbone of performance catamaran racing in Australia and North America, prized for its robust construction and its ability to maintain high speeds in conditions that would force smaller cats to depower.
