Before Robert Newton and his sons, John and Whit, forever altered the recreational powerboating landscape by launching the legendary Grand Banks line of trawleryachts, their Junk Bay shipyard in Hong Kong operated under the name American Marine Ltd. Known for building exceptionally heavy, premium wooden sailing yachts designed by the world's premier naval architects, the yard was a sanctuary of traditional craftsmanship. Among their most notable sailing projects was the Magellan 35, designed by the respected Bostonbased design firm EldredgeMcInnis. First launched in 1965, the Magellan 35 was conceived as a robust, highly finished centercockpit motorsailer—a vessel that blended genuine displacementhull sailing capability with the muscular auxiliary power and cruising comfort of a trawler. Designed for longrange cruising, the model represents the pinnacle of East Asian wooden boatbuilding just prior to the industry's wholesale transition to fiberglass.
