A used Sanibel 18 will generally show a monohull fiberglass hull with wood trim, a transom-hung rudder, and a lifting centerboard rather than a fixed keel. Below, the layout sleeps three: a double V-berth forward and a straight settee in the main cabin. The related Sanibel 17, introduced in 1985 and renamed the Sanibel 18 in 1986, is nearly the same boat, so a hull wearing a 17 badge may in fact be the later 18, or vice versa, depending on the year it left the line.

The design's engine type is a single outboard motor mounted on the transom, the only propulsion fitted as standard. Beyond that, the one factory-level change that matters to a buyer is the cabin-top modification: later 18s carry a trio of molded risers on the cabin roof to take a single teak rail, a detail absent on the 17.

Because the 17 and 18 are so close, the first check is the cabin top: the easiest way to separate a Sanibel 17 from a Sanibel 18 is the presence of the teak rail on raised pads, which the 18 received during its production anchor. If a seller labels the boat a 17 but it shows the rail, it is the later 18. Also confirm the cockpit seats were raised, a change made on the 18 to add knee room in the cabin berths anchor; a low seat line with no rail suggests an early 17. Beyond identity, inspect the centerboard trunk and the transom-hung rudder pivot for wear from the lifting-board and outboard setup, and check the wood trim for weathering given its exposed role in an otherwise fiberglass boat.

With a combined 169 hulls of the 17 and 18 completed between 1985 and 1988 and all versions now out of production, the boat is a scarce but uncomplicated used purchase. Before committing, run through this short list:
