Dehler sailboats: a racing pedigree that survived two brushes with insolvency

Dehler traces to a Dortmund electrician's sailing hobby, a three-quarter tonner that won America's most important regatta series of its day, and two separate rescues from insolvency that eventually delivered the yard into the Hanse Group's hands. Along the way, the yard's design authorship passed from Dutch designer E. G. van de Stadt to Judel/Vrolijk & Co, and its production moved from a small Sauerland works to Hanse's Greifswald site. The result is a brand whose identity was shaped as much by outside designers and racing results as by any single owner.

Origins and ownership

Willi Dehler ran an electrical business in Dortmund (Dehler's own history calls him an electrical engineer) before sailing pulled him toward boatbuilding; he came to the Dortmunder Yachtclub on Lake Möhne through his Opel dealer at the end of the 1950s. In 1963 he began designing and building the Winnetou dinghy alone, as a hobby in his garage. After it sold well at the Interboot trade fair in Friedrichshafen, Willi sold his electrical business and his brother Heinz — four years younger, and responsible for the commercial side of the business — sold his house to join him; together they founded Dehler Bootsbau OHG in Freienohl, with Willi holding a 51 percent majority and Heinz the remaining 49 percent. The brothers presented their first Varianta, a small cruiser adapted from a van de Stadt dinghy design with a removable cabin added, at the Hamburg boat show in January 1966, and found 27 buyers straight away.

Willi Dehler stepped down as company president in 1995. Three years later, in 1998, a group of Dutch investors saved the firm from going out of business. Willi Dehler died in 1999, honoured that year by the sailing community, at the age of 70. Ten years after the Dutch rescue, having acquired the Belgian Etap yard about a year earlier, Dehler filed for bankruptcy amid the 2008 recession after debt and a lack of orders, a failed bailout plan involving the North Rhine-Westphalia government, and a failed cooperation attempt with Poland's Delphia yard; Etap risked going down with it. In spring 2009, the Hanse Group — then Germany's second-largest sportboat builder, newly listed on the Frankfurt stock exchange and in expansion mode — acquired the insolvent yard and relaunched the Varianta 18, a modern reissue of the old best-seller. Karl Dehler, Willi's son, rejoined the team and revived product development as the larger models' production moved to Greifswald; in 2020 he served as technical chairman when regatta sailor Uwe Barthel and organizer Felix Hauß helped establish the class association for the new Dehler 30 One Design.

The designers

Willi Dehler's connection to E. G. van de Stadt shaped the yard's early identity: van de Stadt scaled up his existing Randmeer dinghy design and added a removable cabin to create the Varianta. In 1979, sailmaker Berend Beilken of Bremen and van de Stadt-office designer Cees van Tongeren drew a three-quarter tonner to the International Offshore Rule for Dehler, naming the type db1 after Dehler and Beilken; the first series boat, Luv, won the SORC off Kiel, Cowes, and Miami, then finished runner-up and series world champion at the class world championships from 1980 to 1983. The db2 that followed carried an elliptical keel and rudder from a young naval architect, Torsten Conradi, who later became a co-owner of Judel/Vrolijk & Co — the firm that went on to design every Hanse and Dehler yacht that followed, including the 2016 Dehler 34. Willi Dehler stopped series production of the db racers in 1986, as one-off race-boat designs became fashionable again and drove costs up. The yard's collaboration with Judel/Vrolijk & Co proper began in the mid-1990s and first showed fully in the Dehler 29, launched in 1997 as one of the earliest models to carry the firm's steep stem and upright stern.

Construction through the eras

In 1976, Dehler released the Sprinta 70, the first series-produced yacht with a self-tacking jib. The 2016 Dehler 34 illustrates the modern standard: a carbon-reinforced floor assembly, a hand-laid balsa-core sandwich hull and deck using higher-quality, osmosis-resistant vinyl ester resin in the hull's first two layers, and a hull-to-deck joint that is glued and partially laminated rather than bolted. Production itself shifted in 2012: Hanse had initially kept the historic Freienohl works running after its 2009 acquisition, but shuttered it that spring and consolidated all construction at Greifswald. The first model built there start to finish, the Dehler 38, arrived in 2013 and was named Boat of the Year at the 2014 boot trade fair.

Lines and generations

In the 1980s, Dehler unified its yachts over 10 metres under a single brand name, discontinuing the earlier Optima, Sprinta, and Varianta lines in favor of shipyard-and-length numbering. That renaming produced Dehler's clearest case of a reused model number: the 1980s Dehler 34, descended from the 1985 Optima 101 and the 1986 Optima 106, was built roughly 1,300 times across its variants — a production record for the type that still stands. The all-new 2016 Dehler 34 shares only the name; it is a Judel/Vrolijk & Co design that replaced the yard's established 35-foot Simonis/Voogd model rather than descending from the earlier boat. A similar reset happened with the Dehler 38: a 1987 van de Stadt design gave way to an unrelated Judel/Vrolijk 38 built at Greifswald from 2013. Alongside the cruising numbers, the racing-bred db-series and the newer Dehler 30 One Design bookend the brand's competitive line, three decades and two design partners apart.

Who Dehler is for

Yachting Monthly, covering the Hanse acquisition, credited Willi Dehler with building "Germany's largest yacht yard of the time" and with construction innovations the magazine called revolutionary enough to still prevail decades later. That competitive inheritance — a three-quarter tonner that won the SORC, a keel design its creator carried forward into Judel/Vrolijk's later work, a One Design class built for club racing — points toward sailors who want a boat that rewards trim and helm feel as much as interior volume. Dehler's own history frames 2017 as the year the brand reached market leadership in the performance-cruiser category, built on the Greifswald-era range that followed the 2013 Dehler 38.

Frequently asked questions

01Who founded Dehler, and when?+
Willi Dehler, an electrician who ran a specialised shop in Dortmund, began designing and building the Winnetou dinghy alone, as a garage hobby, in 1963. After it sold well at the Interboot trade fair, Willi sold his electrical business and his younger brother Heinz sold his house to join him; together they founded Dehler Bootsbau OHG in Freienohl, and the brothers presented their first Varianta cruiser at the Hamburg boat show in January 1966.
02Who designed Dehler's boats?+
Dutch designer E. G. van de Stadt shaped the early lineup, starting with the Varianta. Willi Dehler's yard also worked with van de Stadt-office designer Cees van Tongeren and sailmaker Berend Beilken on the racing-bred db1 in 1979. Judel/Vrolijk & Co became the design partner starting in the mid-1990s, first showing fully in the Dehler 29 launched in 1997, and went on to design later models including the 2016 Dehler 34.
03Did Dehler ever go out of business?+
Yes, twice. A group of Dutch investors saved the yard from collapse in 1998, three years after founder Willi Dehler stepped down as company president. A second bankruptcy followed the 2008 recession, after a bailout plan involving the North Rhine-Westphalia government and a proposed tie-up with Poland's Delphia yard both fell through; the Hanse Group acquired the insolvent company in spring 2009.
04Where are Dehler sailboats built?+
Dehler was built at Freienohl in Germany's Sauerland region from the company's founding. After the Hanse Group's 2009 acquisition, Hanse shuttered the Freienohl works in spring 2012 and consolidated all Dehler production at its Greifswald site near the Baltic Sea.
05Do older and newer Dehlers with the same model number share a design?+
Not always. Dehler reused model numbers across unrelated designs built decades apart: the 1980s Dehler 34, descended from the Optima 101 and Optima 106, is a van de Stadt-office cruising hull, while the 2016 Dehler 34 is an unrelated Judel/Vrolijk & Co design. The 1987 Dehler 38 and the Greifswald-built 2013 Dehler 38 are likewise separate designs.
