Buying a used Dehler: performance pedigree, judged boat by boat
A used Dehler carries a racing pedigree bigger than any single listing: a three-quarter tonner that won the SORC, a naval-architecture partner handed off from van de Stadt to Judel/Vrolijk & Co, and a company history that survived two separate brushes with insolvency before landing under the Hanse Group. None of that history substitutes for condition. A Dehler bought for its design lineage still has to be judged on the individual boat's rig, deck hardware, and hull, because the brand's performance-cruiser identity assumes sailing loads a comfort-first cruiser rarely sees, and years of hard use show up in specific, documented places.
Which era to target
The clearest dividing line in the range is design authorship and ownership, not raw age. Boats predating Judel/Vrolijk & Co's arrival as design partner in the mid-1990s — the van de Stadt-descended cruisers and the Optima-turned-Dehler-34 lineage built into the late 1980s — come from a different design office than anything built from the Dehler 29 onward in 1997. A second, sharper line falls across 2008 to 2012: Dehler filed for bankruptcy amid the 2008 recession after debt, a lack of orders, and two failed rescue attempts, and the Hanse Group bought the insolvent company the following spring. Hanse kept the old Sauerland plant running for a few years before winding it down entirely in favor of its Greifswald site; nothing built there afterward shares a factory with the pre-Hanse company. A Dehler from the 2013 model year on, starting with the first boat finished top-to-bottom at Greifswald, belongs to that Hanse-built lineage instead.
What to inspect across the range
Balsa-cored sandwich construction runs through most of the range, from the 1980s Dehler 25 up through the Judel/Vrolijk-era 29, 32, 39, and 38 SQ, which makes moisture intrusion the inspection point that matters most regardless of model or era. YACHT's test of the Duetta 86 documented that failure mode directly: moisture working into the balsa core through hairline gelcoat cracks, alongside worn rudder bearings that show up as a slapping blade under engine power. The same publication's test of the 31 TOP flagged Dehler's deep-drawn ABS interior parts as another item that spans several models — cheap and light when new, but on Duetta-era boats no longer available, so a damaged part has to be rebuilt in GRP rather than replaced. Resin quality is less of a worry: Yachting Monthly's review of the Dehler 31 reported that the marque has never had an osmosis problem, crediting the resins used.
Navigating the lineup
Within that timeline, the range splits by size and mission more than by model number: compact van de Stadt-descended cruisers, mid-size Judel/Vrolijk performance cruisers from the brand's independent years, and the Greifswald-built performance cruisers and One Design boats that followed the Hanse takeover. A given model number doesn't always track one lineage, either — Dehler reused the "34" and "38" designations on genuinely unrelated designs decades apart, so era matters more than the number on the transom. The full model directory on this page is the place to compare specific years and sizes once era and mission are narrowed down.
