First conceived in 1969 by the revered Australian naval architect Peter Cole, the Cole 43 represents a historic highwater mark in Australian yacht design. Originally drawn as a highperformance design to bridge the gap between the era's bespoke ocean racers and highly capable, structuralgrade cruising yachts, the hull made its physical debut in GRP (glass reinforced plastic) in 1970. Primary construction fell to East Coast Yachts in Gosford, New South Wales, which earned a reputation for laying up incredibly stout, handlaminated hulls capable of withstanding the punishing sea states of the Tasman Sea. This design entered production during a transitional period in naval architecture, successfully translating the narrowended, deepbodied aesthetics of early International Offshore Rule (IOR) shapes into a highly seaworthy, massproduction fiberglass cruiser.
