Ta Shing Yacht Building Ltd.

Active: 1947 – Present

The esteemed boat builder Ta Shing Yacht Building Ltd. traces its roots back to 1957, when C.M. Juan founded the company under the original name Shing Sheng. Initially, the yard dedicated itself to constructing traditional wooden fishing boats and smaller commercial vessels in Tainan City, Taiwan. A pivotal moment arrived in the 1960s when Shing Sheng became a pioneer in Taiwan's marine industry, innovating the production of Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic (FRP) fishing boats. These early FRP vessels were so well-regarded that some were even presented as a special gift from the Taiwanese government to the Panamanian government, a testament to their early build quality. The entity known today as Ta Shing Yacht Building Co., Ltd. was formally established in 1978, near Anping Harbor in Tainan.

History and Evolution

The 1960s marked a significant shift for Ta Shing (then Shing Sheng) as the yard transitioned into building sailing yachts. This period saw Ta Shing primarily engaged in Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) contracts, constructing vessels for various American and, at times, European organizations. Their reputation for meticulous craftsmanship grew, leading to partnerships with several notable brands. Throughout the 1980s, Ta Shing was responsible for building sailboats under the OEM model for acclaimed names such as Mason, Baba, Panda, Skye, and Mystic. They also expanded into motor yachts, notably building Nordhavn trawlers under OEM agreements.

The late 1980s heralded a new era for Ta Shing with the development of its own distinct brands. In the 1980s, the yard introduced its self-owned Tashiba sailboats. Following this, around 1985 or 1986, Ta Shing launched its highly respected Taswell range of yachts, marking a strategic move to establish its own identity in the global yachting market. The company has consistently pursued excellence, expanding its facilities with a branch factory in 2003. Their commitment to nurturing talent has also been recognized, with Ta Shing being shortlisted for the prestigious IBI-METSTRADE Boat Builder Awards for its apprenticeship schemes in both 2017 and 2019. Since its founding, Ta Shing has delivered over 1,200 custom-made boats by 2015, showcasing a prolific and consistent output.

Design Philosophy and Identity

Ta Shing has cultivated an enviable reputation in the sailing world, known predominantly for its unwavering commitment to hand-crafted quality, meticulous attention to detail, and continuous innovation. The shipyard is highly regarded for building high-quality, custom bluewater cruising yachts that are celebrated for their exceptional seaworthiness and comfort. Indeed, Ta Shing is widely considered among the best cruising boat builders globally.

The company's design philosophy emphasizes robust construction, evident in their use of premium woods, hand-joined cabinetry, and durable hull layups, often featuring solid fiberglass construction. This dedication to foundational strength ensures the longevity and aesthetic excellence for which their yachts are known.

A significant part of Ta Shing's identity is defined by its collaborations with an array of renowned naval architects and designers. These partnerships have consistently delivered timeless and technically advanced vessels:

  • Robert Perry: A prolific designer, Perry is credited with the designs for the iconic BABA/TOSHIBA models, including the well-regarded Tashiba 40 and Baba 40, which are prized for their traditional aesthetics and offshore capabilities. He also designed the resilient Norseman 447.
  • Al Mason: Mason's classic lines defined the popular Mason series, encompassing models such as the Mason 33, 43, 44, 53, 54, and 64.
  • Gary Mull: The elegant Orion 50, built by Ta Shing between 1983 and 1987, was the result of a collaboration with designer Gary Mull.
  • Bill Dixon: Instrumental in shaping Ta Shing's own brand, Bill Dixon's studio designed the entire Taswell range of yachts, which range from 43 to 60 feet.

Iconic Models and Legacy

Ta Shing's legacy is marked by a series of iconic boat models that have become highly sought after by cruising enthusiasts worldwide:

  • Mason Series: These classic sailing yachts, designed by Al Mason, hold cult status for their timeless aesthetics and exceptional ocean-going capabilities. Notable models include the Mason 33 (25 built), Mason 43 (82 built), and Mason 44 (68 built), among others like the 53, 54, and 64.
  • BABA/TOSHIBA Models: Designed by Robert Perry, the Baba and Tashiba series, such as the Tashiba 40, are celebrated for their robust offshore performance and classic, traditional lines, making them favorites for serious cruisers.
  • Orion 50: Designed by Gary Mull, the Orion 50 ketch (sometimes cutter-rigged) was built between 1983 and 1987, known for its strong build and seaworthiness.
  • Norseman 447: This center-cockpit cutter, designed by Robert Perry and built from 1980 to 1986, is emblematic of Ta Shing's ability to blend performance with safety and comfort, and is built with a solid fiberglass hull.
  • Taswell Range: Introduced in 1985/86 and designed by Bill Dixon, the Taswell range represents Ta Shing's "own brand" of performance cruising yachts. These yachts are available in various lengths, from 43 feet up to 60 feet, including models like the Taswell 43, 49, 50, 56, 58, and 60. The line includes both center cockpit and "All Season" (Pilot House) raised deck saloon versions, offering versatility and comfort for long-distance voyaging.

Over its decades of operation, Ta Shing has produced hundreds of yachts, ranging from 30 to 72 feet, each often classified as a semi-custom yacht, allowing for a high degree of personalization for clients.

The Builder Today

Ta Shing Yacht Building Ltd. remains a vibrant and respected force in the global marine market today. The company's facilities are still located in Tainan City, Taiwan, near Kaohsiung International Airport. It continues to operate under the leadership of Tim Juan, the son of founder C.M. Juan, ensuring a continuity of vision and tradition.

In the modern era, Ta Shing continues to produce custom and semi-custom yachts, maintaining its reputation for superior craftsmanship while also embracing advanced composite technologies and cutting-edge yacht systems. Ta Shing's modern boats continue to appeal to discerning buyers seeking high-quality, custom bluewater yachts that offer enduring value, skilled craftsmanship, and proven performance. The company has fostered a strong and loyal following among knowledgeable owners, many of whom have completed extensive global voyages aboard their Ta Shing-built vessels, underscoring the brand's reliability and seaworthiness. This passionate owner community further solidifies Ta Shing's esteemed position in the luxury yacht and sailing boat market worldwide.
