S2 Yachts

Active: 1974 – 1989

In the annals of American yachting, few names resonate with the blend of entrepreneurial spirit, meticulous craftsmanship, and adaptability quite like S2 Yachts. Born from a unique set of circumstances, this Holland, Michigan-based builder carved out a distinctive niche in the sailboat market before seamlessly transitioning into powerboat production, leaving an indelible mark on the marine industry.

The genesis of S2 Yachts lies in the remarkable journey of its founder, Leon Slikkers. A seasoned veteran of fiberglass boat building, Slikkers had already established a successful powerboat company, Slickcraft, which he founded in 1954. However, after selling Slickcraft, a sales agreement temporarily precluded him from the powerboat market. Unfazed by this restriction, Slikkers turned his formidable talents to sailboat construction, founding S2 Yachts in 1974. The "S2" in the company's name fittingly stood for "Slikkers' second company".

His vision for S2 Yachts was clear: to build quality boats, leveraging his extensive experience in fiberglass construction. Slikkers established a brand-new manufacturing facility that, even then, was regarded as a benchmark for production-line efficiency and stringent quality control. This commitment to a high standard of build quality from the outset became a hallmark of the S2 brand.

History and Evolution

S2 Yachts quickly made its mark in the sailing world. The company was among the early adopters of innovative construction techniques, notably being one of the first sailboat builders to incorporate fabric into their manufacturing processes. Their fiberglass hulls were crafted in a climate-controlled environment, ensuring consistent quality.

By the late 1970s, as the terms of his previous sales agreement likely relaxed or expired, Leon Slikkers began to re-enter the powerboat market under the S2 Yachts umbrella. This diversification led to the establishment of the highly successful Tiara line. In a testament to his enduring business acumen, Slikkers was later able to reacquire his original powerboat venture, Slickcraft, bringing it back into the family of brands.

The era of S2 sailboats, however, came to a close in 1989, as the company shifted its primary focus to powerboat production. While the majority of sailboat manufacturing ceased then, there was limited re-production of the popular 7.9 one-design model in 1990 and 1993. By 1987, the Grand Slam performance series, which had been introduced in 1979, was also discontinued.

Design Philosophy and Identity

S2 Yachts quickly earned a strong reputation for producing well-built, high-quality sailboats. Their design philosophy emphasized consistent quality in the production boat market. This focus on robust construction and reliable performance made them a respected name among sailors.

A key contributor to S2's early designs was naval architect Arthur Edmunds, who was responsible for several sailboat designs between 1974 and 1980. While not explicitly stated, the collaboration with a dedicated naval architect highlights S2's commitment to sound design principles alongside their renowned build quality.

Iconic Models and Legacy

Throughout its relatively brief but impactful tenure in sailboat manufacturing, S2 Yachts introduced several models that remain admired by enthusiasts today. Among the most recognized and iconic S2 sailboat models are the 9.2, 7.3, 9.1, 11 Center Cockpit, and 11 Meter. The S2 7.9 meter sailboat was particularly popular, so much so that it was briefly brought back into production on a limited basis after the initial cessation of sailboat manufacturing.

Beyond their standard cruising models, S2 also ventured into the performance sailing realm with their Grand Slam series, introduced in 1979. These various lines cemented S2's legacy as a builder capable of delivering both comfortable cruisers and competitive racers.

The Builder Today

While S2 Yachts ceased sailboat production in 1989, the company itself continues to thrive under the Slikkers family's leadership. Today, S2 Yachts, Inc. serves as the parent company for two prominent powerboat brands: Tiara Yachts and Pursuit Boats. Leon Slikkers, the visionary founder, has been recognized for his contributions to the industry, including being inducted into the NMMA Hall of Fame.

The commitment to quality, innovative manufacturing, and customer satisfaction that defined S2 Yachts' sailboat era is unequivocally carried forward by Tiara Yachts, which was founded under the S2 Yachts Inc. umbrella in 1974. The enduring legacy of S2 Yachts sailboats is evident in the continued admiration for these well-built vessels within the sailing community, a testament to Leon Slikkers' original vision for quality and efficiency.
