Developed by the Seaway Group in Slovenia and designed by the prolific J&J Design, it was the world’s first production cruising yacht to be built entirely from carbon fiber and epoxy resin. This choice of materials allowed for a 50-foot yacht with a light-ship displacement of approximately 9,200 kg (20,282 lbs)—nearly half the weight of its contemporary fiberglass rivals. By combining the speed of a racing hull with the protected "deck saloon" amenities of a luxury cruiser, the Shipman 50 successfully defined the "performance cruiser" niche, eventually earning the prestigious European Yacht of the Year award in 2004.
