The Morgan 38, particularly the series designed by Ted Brewer in the late 1970s and 1980s, represents a significant departure from the earlier Charley Morgandesigned racercruisers and the later "charterspecial" Out Island series. Often referred to as the Morgan 382, 383, and 384 to distinguish them from the 1960s original, this line was conceived as a rugged, highquality offshore cruiser capable of handling bluewater passages while maintaining a respectable turn of speed. Unlike the flatbottomed, highvolume hulls that would later dominate the production market, the Brewerdesigned 38s feature a traditional underwater profile with a heavy displacement of approximately 17,200 to 18,000 pounds and a deepsump keel. These boats were built during the "Golden Age" of overengineered fiberglass, resulting in a hull that remains a favorite for solo circumnavigators and coastal cruisers alike.
