Leisure 22 Buyer's Guide
The Leisure 22 is a Cobramold-built small cruiser designed by Graham Caddick and announced in 1970, with a few hundred built from 1971. On the used market she presents as a 22-foot, 5-berth family cruiser with twin- or fin-keel options and a balsa-cored deck — a straightforward boat to assess if you know where the documentation points.
Layouts on the Used Market
The accommodation is arranged as a main saloon in a dinette layout with a large fore cabin, normally carrying a separate toilet compartment that leaves one rather short berth forward, for five berths in total. Cabin headroom is 5 ft 8 in, and the interior makes much use of teak and teak veneers. A galley with a two-burner gas stove and a sink with freshwater pump were normally or standard fitted. The deep cockpit shelters the crew well but limits forward vision when seated. Both twin-keel and fin-keel versions appear; the twin draws 0.81 m and can be beached, the fin 1.19 m.
Equipment and Common Upgrades
The standard auxiliary was an outboard of 8–10 HP, though some boats were fitted with inboard petrol or diesel. On the brokerage market, solar, spinnaker, chartplotter, and short-handed setup are commonly fitted, and the masthead rig originally carried gold-anodised aluminium spars with internal halyards and stainless steel standing rigging. Mainsheet, genoa and jib sheets are around 10 mm diameter, with the mainsheet longest at 16.8 m.
What to Inspect
The balsa-cored deck is the key concern: because balsa is used as the sandwich core, special care must be taken with any work requiring penetration of the construction, so check for soft spots, prior through-deck fixes, and compromised core around fittings. Confirm which keel version is fitted and whether the iron keels and cast-iron fin show corrosion. Note the deep cockpit's trade-off — excellent protection but reduced forward vision when seated — and verify the rudder and skeg GRP with steel framework for cracking or rust bleed.
Availability and Buyer's Takeaway
Typical markets for the Leisure 22 are the United Kingdom, Germany, Spain, and Italy. When viewing, check the deck core at every penetration, confirm keel type and engine configuration, and inspect the bonded bulkheads and iron keels.
- Verify balsa deck core integrity at all fasteners and fittings
- Confirm twin- or fin-keel and check iron for corrosion
- Identify outboard vs inboard auxiliary
- Inspect rudder/skeg GRP and steel framework
- Note deep-cockpit forward-blind-spot trade-off
