First introduced in 1970 during the height of the trailerable sailboat boom, the Clipper Marine 26—frequently cataloged in modern registries under the spelling Klipper 26—was engineered to bridge the gap between small daysailers and dedicated coastal cruisers. Designed by the celebrated naval architect W.I.B. Crealock and produced by Southern Californiabased Clipper Marine, the vessel was an ambitious attempt to maximize interior volume and overall length while remaining legally transportable behind a standard passenger vehicle of the era. By utilizing an eightfoot beam to match the maximum highway towing width of its time, Crealock delivered a pocket cruiser that democratized overnight sailing, allowing owners to bypass expensive mooring slips and explore inland lakes and coastal estuaries on a workingclass budget.
