Design Brief & Intent
The core mission of the Contest 49CS is to deliver a "mini-superyacht" experience to owner-operators who prefer the sailing dynamics and social flow of an aft-cockpit yacht over a traditional center-cockpit layout. While center-cockpit configurations excel at isolating the cockpit from the water and providing a grand aft stateroom, they often sacrifice helm-to-water connection and rear deck space. The 49CS reclaims this connection, presenting a vast aft deck, twin helm stations, and a direct path to the water via a drop-down transom that conceals a tender garage. This puts the model in direct competition with elite European offerings such as the Oyster 495, the Amel 50, and the Hallberg-Rassy 50.
Where the Contest 49CS genuinely distinguishes itself from competitors is in its construction methodology and structural acoustic engineering. The hull and deck are formed using a highly advanced "one-shot" vacuum infusion process. Rather than bonding separate structural elements post-infusion, the hull, foam core, and internal framing grid are infused with vinylester resin simultaneously. This creates an incredibly rigid, monocoque structure that does not rely on the deck to maintain its shape.
To complement this stiff structure, the shipyard collaborated with Wetzels Brown Partners for the interior styling and engaged specialized acoustic engineers to mitigate noise and vibration. The result below decks is a sanctuary of silence. Even when battling heavy head seas, there is a total absence of structural creaking or joinery movement. The interior joinery—typically executed in light oak or traditional teak—features flawless grain matching and soft-closing mechanisms, embodying the meticulous level of Dutch craftsmanship.
Variations & Configurations
The single hull mold shared by the Contest 49CS and 50CS is configured in two distinct deck and interior layouts. The 49CS utilizes the aft-cockpit layout featuring twin helms, a deep forward guest cockpit, and dual mirror-image cabins tucked under the cockpit sole. The interior layout places the primary owner’s suite forward in the bow, providing a private sanctuary complete with a centerline island berth, extensive hanging locker storage, and a dedicated vanity desk.
The sail plan and spars offer deep customization. The standard yacht is equipped with a three-spreader aluminum mast and a fully battened mainsail. Owners looking for effortless shorthand management typically opt for hydraulic or electric in-mast furling, coupled with a hydraulic backstay tensioner and an integrated carbon bowsprit for flying asymmetric spinnakers or a Code Zero. For performance-oriented owners, a carbon mast and high-tech laminate sails, such as North Sails 3Di Endurance, are available.
Beneath the waterline, the yacht is fitted with a standard deep bulb keel drawing 7.71 feet (2.35 meters) to maximize righting moment and aerodynamic lift. Under the hood, auxiliary power is supplied by a standard, highly reliable 110 HP Yanmar diesel engine driving a traditional shaft line. However, one of the most significant engineering variations of this model is the factory-integrated Torqeedo Deep Blue Hybrid electric propulsion system. This cutting-edge setup pairs a 50kW electric sail-drive with high-capacity BMW i3-generation lithium-ion battery packs, backed by an onboard 20kW generator and a smart power management system that allows for near-silent motoring and extensive regeneration under sail.
Sailing Performance & Handling
The physical numbers behind the Contest 49CS tell the story of a powerful, sea-kindly passagemaker. With a displacement of 50,485 pounds, a displacement-to-length ratio (Disp/LWL) of 209.37, and a comforting comfort ratio of 39.3, she sits firmly in the moderate-to-heavy displacement cruiser class. This displacement gives the yacht a highly reassuring, momentum-driven motion in a seaway. She does not pitch aggressively into head seas; instead, she slices through them smoothly. A capsize screening formula of 1.74 indicates exceptional stability, ensuring she is well within safety thresholds for ultimate ocean survival.
With a sail area-to-displacement ratio (SA/Disp) of 16.76, the yacht is sufficiently powered to perform in light air while maintaining a highly manageable, stiff profile as the wind builds. In heavy-weather sea trials conducted by Yachting World and Germany's YACHT magazine in the North Sea, the 49CS demonstrated superb poise. Sailing in 30-knot blows and steep, wind-against-tide waves, the yacht carried a full mainsail and genoa on a reach, tracking cleanly and logging speeds of up to 14 knots without losing her footing.
The twin-rudder configuration is a vital design element here. By placing a rudder deep on each bilge, the helm remains exceptionally light, responsive, and free of stall risk, even when the boat is pressed hard and heeling significantly in gusts. The single-runner rig and balanced sail plan mean that when the wind gets heavy, reefing is easily accomplished from the safety of the cockpit using push-button hydraulic controls.
Modernization & Upgrades
Because the Contest 49CS is a relatively young design launched in 2022, its brokerage history does not suffer from age-related degradation. However, early factory iterations and owner modifications have refined the yacht. On the very first hulls, the primary fuel filters for the Yanmar diesel were positioned beneath the navigation station stool, which proved difficult to service when the optional larger chart table was selected. Responding to feedback, Contest Yachts moved these critical filters to a more accessible location under the galley sink, positioned neatly behind the waste bin.
Additionally, the trend toward gas-free living has seen rapid adoption on this model. While standard builds utilize traditional gel service batteries, many owners have upgraded to a 24V lithium-ion (LiFePO4) battery bank (up to 600Ah), which integrates seamlessly with high-output alternators, an inverter, and induction cooktops. This setup eliminates the need to carry propane on long voyages and allows for running heavy-load items like air conditioning and watermakers overnight without requiring the continuous use of a diesel generator. Synthetic teak decking (such as Esthec) is also standard on the 49CS, reducing the long-term maintenance and environmental concerns associated with traditional teak.
The Verdict
The Contest 49CS is a triumph of modern semi-custom yacht building, seamlessly bridging the gap between high-performance hull design and ultra-luxurious, silent accommodations. It is an ideal cruiser for couples or families who want a highly refined, premium vessel capable of blue-water passages but with the nimble feel and sociability of an aft-cockpit layout. While it carries a premium price tag that reflects its hand-built Dutch heritage, its build quality and structural integrity stand at the very top of its class.
