The Cal 252, also known as the Cal 25 MkII, is the secondgeneration evolution of Lapworth's original 1965 Cal 25, and it shows a designer refining a proven small cruiser rather than starting fresh. C. William "Bill" Lapworth carried his long Jensen Marine partnership into this update, and where the first boat wore a trunk cabin and flattop deck, the MkII adopted a raised cabin with a distinctly different profile and a wider 9foot beam that opened up the deck and the interior alike. The result is a 25foot 3inch masthead sloop that still reads as a thoughtful pocket cruiser.

Cal 2-25 Buyer's Guide

The Cal 25-2, known also as the Cal 25 MkII, is a 25-foot 3-inch Lapworth-designed masthead sloop that succeeded the original Cal 25 with a raised cabin. On the used market it presents as a small, well-balanced cruiser with a fin keel and spade rudder, and a buyer's attention is best spent on a short list of documented wear points rather than on broad condition guesses.

Layouts on the Used Market

The raised-cabin second generation carries five full berths—two settees, a quarter berth, and a V-berth for two adults—with a sliding-door head for privacy and 5 feet 10 inches of saloon headroom. A fold-down dinette and a compact galley with icebox, alcohol stove, and sink suit weekend cruising.

Equipment and Common Upgrades

Many used boats have gained self-tailing winches and had control lines led back to the cockpit for short-handed sailing. Owners have often replaced the portable toilet and upgraded the stove to non-pressurized alcohol. A few have added self-steering.

What to Inspect

On a specific hull, check the maststep area for gelcoat crazing where rig load concentrates on deck or where the liner shows it below anchor; press the cabintop there for sag, and confirm the head door slides and the rig is not slack. Look for swage cracks in the standing rigging and wear at through-hulls. Verify any post-sale wiring, since owners report electrical faults from poor installation. Probe the foredeck for softness signaling chainplate leaks and delamination.

Availability and Buyer's Takeaway

These boats are found in the United States. Before you commit, run a short checklist: check the maststep for crazing and cabintop sag; cycle the head privacy door and feel the rig tension; inspect swages and through-hulls closely; trace any added wiring to its source; probe the foredeck near the chainplates for softness.
