Alpa sailboats: an Olympic-pedigreed pioneer of European fiberglass

Alpa — Azienda Lavorazioni Plastiche Affini — built sailboats for barely two decades, yet did so at the leading edge of Europe's shift from wood to fiberglass. According to Giornale della Vela, the Cremona firm was responsible for Europe's first application of fiberglass in the nautical field, and founder Danilo Cattadori's first creation, a fiberglass Flying Dutchman dinghy, won Olympic gold before the yard had built a single production cruiser. That early credibility carried Alpa through a rotating cast of naval architects — Illingworth, Van de Stadt, and Sparkman & Stephens among them — before the company folded at the end of the 1970s, leaving its final flagship mold to a neighboring Italian builder.

Origins and ownership

Alpa was registered as a sole proprietorship based in Fiesco, in the province of Cremona, in 1956, founded by Danilo Cattadori. His first creation, a fiberglass Flying Dutchman dinghy elaborated from 1951 originals by Uus Van Essen and Conrad Gulcher, won Olympic gold in the Flying Dutchman class at the 1960 Naples Games and earned Cattadori a Compasso d'Oro design award. The Olympic win, per the Alpa Historical Club, brought the shipyard international fame and a place at the Milan Fair and the Paris, Miami, Geneva, Hamburg, Barcelona, and Genoa boat shows. At the end of 1962, production moved to a new, purpose-built factory in Offanengo that Cattadori had commissioned. In 1971, Alpa converted from a sole proprietorship to a joint-stock company, with management entrusted to engineer Adolfo Soldini; Cattadori sold his shares and retired at the same time. Giornale della Vela adds that a downturn in the nautical market and disagreements between Cattadori and the workforce also factored into his departure, and that by the time the shipyard closed it had been owned for a few years by Eng. Soldini, father of ocean racer Giovanni Soldini. The last boat off the line, the Sparkman & Stephens-designed Alpa A34, appeared in 1978 as a 44-unit production success; the shipyard's history ended with its closure in 1979, after it had settled all outstanding obligations with suppliers and other creditors.

The designers

Illingworth signed the A7, Alpa's first production series, in 1961, and returned in 1967 with two further designs: the A9, with a semi-long keel, high deckhouse, and classic 1960s profile, and the more innovative 8.25, which introduced modern waterlines, a fin keel, and a separate skeg-hung rudder; the 8.25 remained in production until 1983, while the A9 ceased as early as 1970. Van de Stadt entered the lineup in 1968 with the 6.7, an updated version of the A7, and Illingworth's own Maica design was reproduced for Alpa, with improvements, as the A11. Sparkman & Stephens arrived in 1969 with the 12.70 — built, Giornale della Vela wrote, with then-unprecedented care and quality, and nicknamed the "Italian Swan 43" — though it reached only a handful of examples before an unfortunate commercial operation behind it shook the yard's foundations. Cattadori himself designed the 9.50 in the early 1970s, reworking the 12.70's lines at a smaller size for a small-cruiser role.

Construction through the eras

Alpa's earliest hulls were part of Europe's first nautical use of fiberglass, and Giornale della Vela credits the yard with launching as many as 22,000 hulls in total across its history, at times completing a tank-tested boat every three days on its production lines. Cremona Sera dates one particular milestone to the Alpa 15 that followed the yard's Flying Dutchman debut: the first single-molded fiberglass hull in the world; Giornale della Vela separately credits Alpa with building, in 1963, what was then Europe's largest sailboat, at roughly 15 meters. Construction practice is best documented on the later flagship 42: its hull was hand-laminated fiberglass built in a single block, with thickness varying by structural stress zone, stiffened by six longitudinal stringers sealed along its full length, and its deck lamination was reinforced with a balsa-core sandwich system.

Lines and generations

From 1972, under Soldini's management, Alpa turned toward bluewater cruising: the 36MS (1972) and the 42 (a Sparkman & Stephens project from 1973 that entered production in 1974 and served as the yard's flagship) both featured high freeboards and central cockpits, a marked shift from the semi-long-keel profiles of the Illingworth era. The first Alpa 42, named Zizanie and flying the Maltese flag, won its class in the 1974 Middle Sea Race, and 67 units were eventually built; its interior, originally drawn by Sparkman & Stephens for 10 berths, was reworked in collaboration with the shipyard by architect Alberto Mercati down to 6 to 8 berths. After Alpa's 1979 closure, the neighboring Zuanelli shipyard — which had already acquired Alpa's construction know-how in 1975 and specialized thereafter in fiberglass sailboat building — bought a mold for the 42 and, after modifying the rudder, ballast, and interior, put it back into production as the Z42.
