Buying a used Alpa: judge the era and the mold, not just the badge

Every boat carrying the Alpa name came out of a Cremona-founded yard that converted from a sole proprietorship to a corporation in 1971, lost its founder around that same conversion, and closed for good in 1979 after settling its debts. That means a used Alpa can be an early Illingworth-era design from the yard's first production run or a late flagship built for barely half a decade, all under a single company name that stopped growing decades ago. Buying used Alpa means treating construction era and design lineage as seriously as the model name itself — and, on at least one boat, knowing that what looks like an Alpa may in fact be a later build on an Alpa mold.

Which era to target

Boats from Illingworth's early run — the A7, A9, and 8.25, plus Van de Stadt's 6.7 update — trace back to classic early-1960s cruiser-racer thinking: semi-long keels and high deckhouses, though the 8.25's fin keel and separate skeg-hung rudder point toward a more modern profile and, per Giornale della Vela, stayed in production far longer than its stablemates, into 1983. Alpa's post-1972 boats target a different kind of buyer entirely: the 36MS and the 42 flagship were built for distance cruising rather than round-the-cans racing, with the extra freeboard and cockpit layout that implies. Buyers should also know the Alpa name doesn't cover everything built on an Alpa mold — after the 1979 closure, the Zuanelli shipyard bought the 42's mold and, once it had modified the rudder, ballast, and interior, sold the result as the Z42, a related but distinct boat.

Navigating the lineup

The range runs from Van de Stadt's compact 6.7 up through the rare, high-quality 12.70 to the 42-foot flagship, so size and era move together more than they do within a longer-lived brand's lineup.
