Buying a used Tayana: condition and configuration matter more than the model name
A used Tayana is less a single known quantity than a family of individually finished boats built over five decades at one Taiwan yard. Ta Yang built every Tayana 37 to order, and it never really abandoned that habit: later owners across the range could still dictate their own accommodation plan, right down to shifting a bulkhead. That means two boats sharing a model name can still differ meaningfully belowdecks, and it puts more weight on a careful survey of the specific hull in front of you than on the model name alone.
Which era to target
Ta Yang's fiberglass process changed at two documented points that are worth bracketing a hull's build date against. Boats built after 1985 got a gelcoat formulated to resist blistering; those from after 1992 were laminated with vinylester resin rather than polyester. A hull from before the mid-1980s is worth surveying with blister history specifically in mind, since it predates that gelcoat change; a boat from the 1990s onward reflects a different resin system entirely. Either boundary is a more useful reference point for comparing hulls than age alone.
What to inspect across the range
Original black iron fuel and water tanks are a documented, age-related concern that turns up on both the Tayana 37 and the Vancouver 42, where tanks have been known to rust once their external paint is chipped. Tankage is worth budgeting attention for on any older Tayana, regardless of which model is under consideration.
Navigating the lineup
The lineup runs from the 37-foot founding model through the Vancouver-badged cutters to larger flagship yachts in the high 40s through 60s, with center-cockpit and deck-saloon variants layered across the bigger sizes.
