Buying a used Comfortina: know which country built your boat

Comfortina has stayed one continuous brand across a 2013 change of ownership and country, so a used Comfortina is not a case of comparing an original marque against a later rebadge. It is the same brand, largely the same core model names, built by a different company in a different country after financial trouble forced a sale at the original Swedish yard. That distinction, more than the model number on the transom, is the first thing a buyer needs to place a used Comfortina in context.

Which era to target

Boats built before 2012 came out of Comfortbåtar AB, the Arvika, Sweden yard tracing to 1964; Jonas Larsson ran it from 2011 until a controlled insolvency around 2012 forced a sale. Boats built from 2013 onward come from SQ Freienohl in Germany, where new owners Niels Töbke and Chris de la Motte relocated the brand's molds, plans, and production stock after buying the company. The core model names — 35, 39, and 42 — carried across that transition, so badge and model number alone will not tell a buyer which yard actually built a given hull; the build year does. Under German ownership those same three models could be individually equipped and furnished to customer requirements, a level of customization worth asking about when comparing a newer German-built example against an older Swedish one.

Comfortina's range splits into the long-running 35/39/42 core and a set of older Swedish-era models — the Comfort 26, Comfort 30, Comfort 32, Comfortina 32, and Comfortina 38. Buyers weighing an earlier Swedish hull against a newer German-built one will find that era split more useful than line names alone; the full model directory on this page breaks the range down boat by boat.
