Buying a used Arcona: one structural idea, several design eras

A used Arcona is less a single design revisited than a single structural idea, a load-bearing galvanised-steel backbone running through the hull, carried across roughly four decades and a size range running from a small 1980s cruiser-racer to a carbon-built modern flagship. These are performance-first boats: a Yachting Monthly tester found even a midsize model like the 380 wasn't built for beginners, with power that's easy to control once you know the boat but that could intimidate someone new to sailing. Because the structural formula holds across the range, the era a boat comes from and the condition of that shared frame tell a buyer more than which specific model is on the transom.

Which era to target

The clearest design-authorship line falls at 2018, when Stefan Qviberg, who had drawn every Arcona since 1982, died; the 370, 380/385, 400, 430, and 435 all carry his design hand. The yard's internal galvanised-steel backbone construction, documented on the 370, 380/385, and later the 415, and its shift toward vacuum-infused Divinycell foam-core sandwich construction with vinyl ester resin on hulls such as the 345, cut across that design-era boundary rather than tracking it exactly. The Arcona 345 marks a transitional design of its own: Italian designer Maurizio Cossutti reworked Qviberg's existing 340 hull rather than starting fresh. Boats from the Arcona 50 onward, introduced in March 2022, carry a new design partnership, Niels Jeppesen and Ariadna Pons, and increasingly bring carbon into the hull, deck, and internal structure at the top of the range. A buyer should treat "who designed it" as a separate era marker from "which materials built it," since the two didn't always change together.

What to inspect across the range

The galvanised-steel backbone that gives Arcona hulls their stiffness is also a documented long-term liability. Surveyors quoted in Yachting Monthly noted that even galvanised frames can rust, and described a case where a failed shower drain let waste water reach a frame through the holes cut for its zinc coating, decaying the surrounding bulkhead from the inside. The same coverage reported cracking around the keel where the flexible fibreglass hull worked against the rigid frame beneath it. Because this backbone construction - a frame, cradle, or beam depending on the model - turns up across the range spanning the 370, 380/385, 415, and 50, a survey on any used Arcona should treat frame and surrounding bulkhead condition as a priority independent of the boat's specific model or year.
