Tartan Yachts

Active: 1971 – Present

For over six decades, Tartan Yachts has stood as a beacon of quality, innovation, and performance in the marine industry. From its humble beginnings to its current status as a producer of world-class sailing yachts, the company has consistently delivered vessels renowned for their robust construction, thoughtful design, and exhilarating sailing characteristics.

Tartan Yachts traces its roots back to 1960 when Charles "Charlie" Britton, a visionary in the sailing world, commissioned the esteemed yacht design firm Sparkman & Stephens to create a groundbreaking new sailboat. This collaboration led to the birth of the Tartan 27, a model that marked a significant departure from traditional wooden boat construction by embracing fiberglass as its primary material.

Initially, the Tartan 27 was built by Douglass & McLeod in Grand River, Ohio. However, in 1971, a fire devastated the Douglass & McLeod factory. Charles Britton subsequently acquired the remnants of the company, officially establishing Tartan Marine (also known as Tartan Yachts) and consolidating its manufacturing operations. This pivotal moment ensured the continuation of the Tartan legacy under Britton's dedicated leadership.

History and Evolution

From its foundational use of fiberglass, Tartan Yachts has continuously embraced advanced materials and construction techniques. The company's commitment to innovation has been a driving force throughout its history, with a focus on developing and utilizing cutting-edge technologies. This includes the transition to infused BPA modified epoxy for hulls and decks, and the integration of carbon fiber masts and booms, showcasing an ongoing evolution in composite technology since the 1960s. The success of early models like the Tartan 4100 even necessitated the expansion of manufacturing facilities to meet demand.

Over the decades, Tartan has navigated various market shifts and corporate changes, maintaining its core values of performance and craftsmanship. In a significant development, Seattle Yachts International acquired Tartan Yachts and Legacy by Tartan, ensuring the continuation of the brand's long-standing tradition of boat manufacturing.

Design Philosophy and Identity

Tartan Yachts has cultivated a strong reputation in the sailing world for producing high-quality, "heirloom quality" yachts that offer superior all-around performance. They are known for their blend of performance-oriented design and comfortable cruising capabilities, appealing to sailors who demand both speed and liveability.

A hallmark of Tartan's design philosophy is its innovative and handcrafted construction. The company is recognized for its robust build quality, including solid lead keels and advanced deck construction techniques that result in exceptional strength, stiffness, and durability. Their commitment to advanced composites, such as infused epoxy hulls and decks, sets them apart in the industry.

While Sparkman & Stephens laid the groundwork with the original Tartan 27, the brand has benefited from ongoing internal design expertise. Notably, Tim Jackett has been a long-standing figure synonymous with the Tartan brand, serving as its Chief Designer and contributing significantly to the modern aesthetic and performance of its yachts.

Iconic Models and Legacy

The Tartan 27, designed by Sparkman & Stephens, stands as the foundational iconic model, marking the company's entry into the fiberglass sailboat market. Its success paved the way for a diverse range of models. Over its history, other notable additions to the Tartan line have included the Tartan 37 and Tartan 41. The Tartan 4100 is particularly significant, becoming the most prolific over 40-foot design in the company's history.

Tartan produces various lines of sailboats, primarily focusing on aft cockpit sailboats and daysailers, with models currently ranging from 7 to 17 meters. While Tartan is not typically associated with high-profile racing campaigns like the America's Cup, its legacy lies in delivering yachts that consistently offer robust construction and excellent sailing performance for private owners who value quality and durability.

The Builder Today

Today, Tartan Yachts operates as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Seattle Yachts International. The company continues to specialize in the design and manufacture of fiberglass sailboats, focusing on the production of "heirloom quality" yachts designed for performance and comfortable cruising.

Modern Tartan boats appeal to discerning sailors who seek a rare combination of performance, innovative design, and meticulous craftsmanship. The ownership experience is often characterized by a strong sense of community, with active owner groups like the Chesapeake Bay Tartan Sailing Club and the Tartan Owners Northeast (TONE), providing platforms for connection, communication, and shared sailing experiences. This vibrant owner community underscores the enduring appeal and loyalty commanded by the Tartan brand.
