Valiant 39 Buyer's Guide
The Valiant 39 on the brokerage market is Robert Perry’s updated take on the Valiant 37, a 39-foot 4-inch cutter that has earned a reputation as a bombproof offshore cruiser. Built around a solid-glass hull with isophthalic resin and a balsa-cored deck, it remains a sought-after bluewater platform for couples and distance cruisers shopping in the United States.
Layouts on the Used Market
Charter four-cabin arrangements are the more common version afloat, though the standard cruising interior is also available, and ex-charter boats are common. The standard layout places a U-shaped galley to starboard, a nav station to port, and smallish doubles in the starboard quarter and forepeak, with a single head aft of the port settee and a separate shower stall.
Equipment and Common Upgrades
Used 39s commonly carry a dodger, bimini, solar, watermaker, radar, autopilot, chartplotter, and EPIRB as factory or dealer-standard kit. Often-seen additions include heating, inverter, asymmetric spinnaker, electric winches, freezer, hardtop, AIS, and life raft. For a buyer, the consequential clusters are power and energy — solar with inverter and often a watermaker mean longer independent stretches — and sail handling and navigation, where autopilot, radar, chartplotter, and AIS reduce crew load on passage.
What to Inspect
The keel is attached to the sump using 3M 5200 and at least eleven 3/4-inch stainless J-bolts with backing plates anchor, so check the bolts and sump glass for corrosion or cracking. The deck is joined to the hull on an inturned flange with 5200 and stainless bolts on 4 1/2-inch centers; examine that seam for weeping. Fuel lives in two removable marine alloy tanks aft of the engine and fresh water in stainless tanks beneath the settees, both worth pulling for internal condition.
Availability and Buyer's Takeaway
The used Valiant 39 market centers on the United States. When viewing a boat, confirm the keel J-bolts and sump, inspect the hull-deck flange, verify tank condition, and confirm the cutter rig’s inner forestay and chain-plate knees are sound.
