The Taylor 40 represents a seminal moment in latetwentiethcentury yacht design, born at the transitional intersection of the International Offshore Rule (IOR) and the emerging International Measurement System (IMS). Designed by Jim Taylor as Design Number 68 and built by the legendary composites pioneer Mark Lindsay Boatbuilders in Gloucester, Massachusetts, the model saw a limited production run of seven hulls beginning in 1988 with the launch of Arbella. Engineered to serve as a highperformance, dualpurpose racercruiser, the Taylor 40 was targeted at serious amateur racing teams who wanted an offshorecapable, timeallowance competitor that rejected the extreme, fragile nature of ultralight "sport boats" in favor of structural stability and predictable handling. Rather than sacrificing safety and comfort to beat a rating system, Jim Taylor and Mark Lindsay delivered an exceptionally stiff, hightech machine that could navigate offshore passages, win prestigious distance races, and still function as a fast coastal cruiser.
