Born out of the golden era of Taiwanese yacht building, the Scorpio 72 represents the ultimate evolution of the heavydisplacement "Taiwanese Ketch". Constructed by the Ta Chiao Bros. Yacht Building Co. in Taiwan for Scorpio Marine Ltd. between 1982 and 1991, this imposing vessel was designed by the legendary naval architect Robert Perry as a stretched, refined sibling to the CT65. Rather than chasing modern racing lines or flatbottomed planing hulls, Perry and the shipyard focused on creating a traditional, longrange blue water cruiser with a classic aesthetic, massive interior volume, and the structural heft to comfortably cross oceans in any weather. Only approximately 30 examples were built, many of which were tailored to the burgeoning luxury charter and highend owneroperator markets of the late 20th century. Today, these yachts are highly regarded by worldgirdling cruisers, serving as robust floating homes and training ships, most famously exemplified by the Laura Dekker World Sailing Foundation's flagship, Guppy.
