In the mid1990s, the UK yachting scene was undergoing a performance revolution, driven by the rise of sportsboats and the evolution of the Channel Handicap System into the modern International Rating Certificate (IRC). Within this fertile environment, British naval architect Stephen Thomas and the specialized builders at Projection Yachts in Southampton conceived a bold, lightdisplacement racercruiser that would bridge the gap between pure sportsboats and traditional cruiserracers. Built between 1996 and 1997, the Projection 920 was designed as the mature, offshorecapable sibling to the wildly popular Projection 762 sportsboat. Engineered to carve through the challenging chop of the Solent and prove competitive in shorthanded offshore races, the Projection 920 was a rare breed of sailboat that prioritized physical feedback, acceleration, and raw speed, yet retained enough of an interior to satisfy safety regulations and the basic comforts of a weekend crew.
