Pogo sailboats: a Brittany racing yard's fast cruisers
Pogo Structures is a French boatbuilder in Combrit Sainte-Marine, Brittany, whose sailboats grew directly out of short-handed ocean racing. According to Yachting World, the yard builds roughly 90 percent of the world's production Mini Transat fleet along with a steady quota of Class40 raceboats, and it carries that same light, resin-infused construction into a smaller line of cruising sailboats.
Origins and ownership
Christian Bouroullec founded Pogo Structures in 1987 in Quimper, France, and remains its chief executive. The yard relocated to Combrit Sainte-Marine in 1990, expanding there to build one-off prototypes alongside its production line. In a 2020 interview, Bouroullec described a shipyard of about 80 people that had by then built almost 900 boats in total. Pogo's first production sailboat, the 6.50, arrived in the mid-1990s — built for the Mini Class's Series division between 1994 and 2002, with 124 completed — and swept every Mini-class title from 1996 to 2002. Bouroullec's own racing record tracks the brand's: he won the series-class Transat 6.50 in 1999.
The designers
Finot-Conq is Pogo's long-standing design partner; Bouroullec has described the two as knowing each other very well after years of working together. The studio designed the Pogo 44, launched in 2020 as successor to the Pogo 12.50, and Pogo's own company history credits that design as a best seller. Pierre Forgia handled the 44's interiors in-house, using light-colored materials and wood accents. On the racing side, naval architect Guillaume Verdier designed the hull of the Pogo 40 S4, the fourth generation of Pogo's Class40, whose first three boats launched in 2021.
Construction through the eras
Pogo standardized vacuum infusion lamination across its full range in 2004, a shift the yard has called a major evolution in build quality; the 40 S4 still uses the technique, which Pogo describes as mastered across its entire model range. Development of the composite-and-lead lifting keel took two years, in 2007 and 2008, and by 2020 Bouroullec said the easily-lifted keel had featured on the yard's cruising boats for twelve years — roughly since 2008. Foam buoyancy is a recurring safety feature across the cruising models: Pogo's own specifications describe foam-filled volumes built into the 44 and the 50 to make them "unsinkable," and Yachting World, testing the Pogo 30, found that the yard puts "most of its effort and expense into creating entirely resin-infused, unsinkable structures rather than creature comforts." The cruising line also shares a rig principle that Finot-Conq notes on the 44 and Pogo's other cruising models: no backstay or runners, which allows a large square-top mainsail.
Lines and generations
Two lineages run through the range. The short-handed racing side begins with the Mini-class 6.50 and continues through the Pogo 2, which replaced it in 2003 and kept winning the Transat 6.50, and the Pogo 3, presented in 2015 as the Pogo 2's successor; in parallel, the Class40 line runs from the 40S2, introduced for offshore racing around 2010, to the Verdier-designed 40 S4 described above. The cruising side grew alongside it: the 8.50, launched in 1999, was built for family cruising as well as surfing the Atlantic swell; Pogo introduced the 12.50 as a new modern cruiser around the same time as the 40S2; the 36, dated to 2017 in the yard's own history, succeeded the 10.50; and the 44 carries the cruising line into its current generation. In 2018 the yard also launched its first motorboat, the Loxo 32, a small departure from sailboats that has remained a sideline.
Who Pogo is for
Between the two lines, Pogo's identity stays with the racing side: the cruising boats carry over the raceboat's light build, resin-infused hulls, and speed-first hull shapes rather than a comfort-driven interior. That combination points the brand at sailors after fast, planing-capable passages who don't mind trading some of a traditional cruiser's polish for it.
