Buying a used Pogo: a raceboat's construction, cruiser-dressed
A used Pogo carries the DNA of the yard's core business: building most of the world's production Mini Transat fleet and a steady run of Class40 raceboats. Even the cruising models inherit that light, resin-infused build rather than a traditional cruiser's heavier, comfort-first construction. For a buyer, that shifts the risk: structural condition, keel systems, and rig hardware matter more than interior finish, and a well-kept example should still sail closer to a raceboat than a typical family cruiser of the same length. Anyone shopping for a plush, amenity-heavy interior is looking at the wrong brand; anyone chasing speed and willing to live with a sparer boat is in the right place.
Which era to target
Pogo's lamination process changed materially in 2004, when the yard extended vacuum infusion to its entire range; hulls built afterward share that more consistent build method, while earlier boats predate the switch. The composite-and-lead lifting keel followed a few years later, developed over 2007 and 2008, and had become a fixture of the cruising range within about a decade of that work. A lifting-keel cruiser from roughly 2008 on reflects a more mature version of that system than an earlier or fixed-keel boat.
What to inspect across the range
Twin-rudder steering shows up on more than one Pogo hull, including the 30 and the 36. Testing the Pogo 30, Yachting World reported little feedback from the twin rudders during hand steering, and noted Pogo said it was addressing the issue — worth checking on any twin-rudder Pogo, since helm feel varies with rudder bearing wear and alignment.
Navigating the lineup
The range splits along the same line as the company's history: short-handed racing boats descended from the Mini-class 6.50, 2, and 3, and Class40s through the 40S4, versus the cruising-oriented 8.50, 12.50, 36, and 44. Buyers who want a boat built to race well will find it in the Mini and Class40 lineage; those wanting more livable volume without losing the yard's performance bias should look toward the cruising models. The full model directory on this page breaks the range down boat by boat.
