Designed by Maurice Griffiths—the legendary editor of Yachting Monthly and a tireless champion of the "everyman's" shoaldraft cruiser—the Lone Gull II was introduced in 1961 as a direct evolution of his 1938 gaffrigged, centerboard predecessor. Griffiths drew this 28foot "little ship" specifically for his own retirement, intending to navigate the demanding, highly tidal swatchways and muddy estuaries of the British East Coast. While contemporary midcentury builders were pursuing raw speed or transitioning to lighter, massproduced hull shapes, the Lone Gull II was conceived as a robust, seakindly sanctuary. Griffiths’ design philosophy prioritized living volume, structural reassuringness, and an unhurried, upright composure on the water. The boat’s character is defined by its raised topsides, which sweep forward to create a distinctive flushdeck profile. This construction maximizes interior volume from bulkhead to bulkhead, utilizing the boat’s full ninefoot beam without the intrusion of narrow side decks. Below decks, the cabin is warm and cavernous, featuring traditional joinery in mahogany, teak, and oak that reflects the craftsmanship of the notable yards of the era, such as Harry Feltham and Whisstocks of Woodbridge.
