The late 1970s was a period of intense experimentation in offshore racing, dominated by the strict and often polarizing parameters of the International Offshore Rule (IOR). In this competitive crucible, British naval architect Stephen Jones designed the Hustler 32, a highperformance HalfTonner that would challenge conventional design thinking. Launched in 1978, the model evolved directly from Jones’s revolutionary woodepoxy prototype Xaviera, which, crewed by legendary yachtsmen like Peter Blake, stunned the racing community by winning the Royal Ocean Racing Club (RORC) Channel Race on corrected time by an unprecedented 45 minutes. This was quickly followed by another modified prototype, Smokey Bear, which secured a hardfought second place out of fifty entrants at the fiercely contested 1978 Half Ton Cup in Poole. This pedigree formed the blueprint for the production Hustler 32, a design that proved so fundamentally fast and seaworthy that its core hull lines were shared with its more cruisingoriented "sister," the Verl Hustler 33.
