Buying a used Hustler: confirm which boat you're looking at first

A "Hustler" listing could be one of two entirely unrelated boats: a British cruiser-racer built in Norfolk from the late 1960s through the early 1980s, or a small, owner-built one-design racing catboat out of Massachusetts Bay. The two share nothing but a name, so the first useful question about any Hustler for sale isn't condition -- it's which lineage the hull actually belongs to.

Which era to target

Within the British line, the split runs by designer generation. Holman & Pye drew the first wave -- the Hustler 30, arriving in 1969-70 and built until 1976, the Hustler 35 from 1970, and the smaller Hustler 25.5 from 1972 -- all completed by Landamores in Wroxham once Tyler Boat Company had molded the hull; the 25.5's hull came from Aquafibre instead. Stephen Jones drew the later SJ generation, home-completed in some cases and built across more than one yard, so an SJ-badged hull is worth tracing back to its actual builder rather than assumed from the model name alone. A buyer targeting an early cruiser-racer wants the Holman & Pye boats; a buyer wanting the later, Jones-designed SJ range is buying a different design office's work entirely. Neither has anything to do with the Massachusetts Bay boat, built one at a time by the sailors who owned it rather than produced across a design generation at all.

Navigating the lineup

Among the British boats, size the range by designer era before comparing lengths: the Holman & Pye 30/35/25.5 trio and the later Jones-designed SJ32/36/SJ-30 occupy overlapping footprints but come from different design offices and different construction runs.
