The Hinckley Sou'wester 34 (often referred to simply as the Hinckley 34) represents a refined chapter in the Maine builder’s transition from traditional fullkeel heavy displacement vessels to the more modern, performanceoriented designs of the late 1970s and 1980s. Designed by the prestigious naval architecture firm McCurdy & Rhodes, the Sou'wester 34 was conceived as a highend coastal cruiser that did not sacrifice the legendary Hinckley aesthetic for speed. While the builder had achieved international fame with the Bill Trippdesigned Bermuda 40, the Sou'wester 34 was a more contemporary evolution, featuring a fin keel and a skeghung rudder that offered a significantly more responsive helm. Approximately 30 of these vessels were produced between 1978 and 1985, making them a rare sight on the used market compared to their larger siblings. The model shares much of its design DNA and construction methodology with the Sou'wester 42 and the Sou'wester 51, both of which were also McCurdy & Rhodes designs that defined the Hinckley fleet during this era.
