The Freeward 25 is a motorised sailing boat of 25 feet that emerged from southern England in 1975 and continued in production between 1975 and 2008, with 270 hulls completed over that span anchor. Designed by Gordon Wyatt and David Freeman, it was first built at Fairways and later at Northshore Yachts Yard Limited in Itchenor, before the mould passed about ten years ago to Neil Marine in Sri Lanka, where the design can still be commissioned. Delivered worldwide, the boat occupies a distinctive niche: a mini ketch with a transom where its family mates carry a canoe stern, and a volume of accommodation unusual for the length.

Freeward 25 Buyer's Guide

Shopping the used Freeward 25 means looking at a 25-foot mini-ketch motorised sailing boat built between 1975 and 2008, with 270 hulls produced and examples delivered worldwide. The design pairs a wheelhouse and deckhouse with a transom — the only Fisher-family member so configured — and a solid fibreglass hull of 4.5 tonnes with two tonnes of ballast. Most buyers will be weighing ex-charter and privately used boats whose layouts differ more than the spec sheet suggests.

Layouts on the Used Market

Charter four-cabin layouts appear more often on the brokerage market, though both the charter and standard arrangements are available, and ex-charter boats themselves are common. The standard boat gives a wheelhouse with port helmsman bench and pull-out starboard settee, a saloon with L-shaped convertible double to port, a starboard dog bunk with navigation table and fridge below, and a head that was relocated from bow to centre in a later facelift. The foredeck carries high berths under a lowering forecastle. Charter versions trade some of this for additional sleeping cabins.

Equipment and Common Upgrades

Heating, a dodger, and a chartplotter are commonly fitted to boats on the market and worth confirming in any viewing. Beyond those, the period galley with gimballed oven, the Yanmar 3 GM diesel, and the 180-litre water and fuel tanks are standard; a buyer should focus on whether the heating system and canvas are sound rather than chasing stereo or galley trinkets.

What to Inspect

On hulls built before 1990, the wheelhouse window frames are known to corrode and leak, so check the aluminium frames for pitting and trace the interior liner below the glass for damp staining that signals failed seals anchor. The same early boats used Treadmaster deck covering bonded without epoxy, and you should look for lifted edges or peeling panels on the cockpit and wheelhouse sole and press the surface for hollow spots. The hull and deck joints remain sound, but these two dated items are the ones that will cost you if missed.

Availability and Buyer's Takeaway

The Freeward 25 turns up most readily in the United Kingdom, Netherlands, and Germany. Before committing, run through this short list:

  • Confirm the build year and inspect pre-1990 window frames for corrosion
  • Test the deck covering for peeling or delamination
  • Verify the heating, dodger, and chartplotter are operational
  • Check the head location matches the facelifted centre layout if that matters to you
  • Review the Yanmar 3 GM for service history and wheelhouse floor removal access
