The Finnsailer 38 stands as the flagship of the fiberglass fleet produced by the Finnish industrial giant Fiskars during the 1970s. Designed by the renowned naval architect Angus Primrose, this vessel was conceived during an era when the "motorsailer" was evolving from a heavy, undercanvased workboat derivative into a sophisticated, allweather cruising platform. Unlike many of its contemporaries that sacrificed sailing prowess for interior volume, the Finnsailer 38 utilized Primrose’s expertise in hull efficiency to create a boat that, while undeniably heavy and stable, could still handle a breeze with more grace than the typical "floating cottage." Built at the Inha Works in Finland, the 38 was the largest sibling in a family that included the popular Finnsailer 29 and 35 (both designed by Hans Groop) and the Finnsailer 34. While Fiskars eventually divested its marine interests to focus on consumer goods, the Finnsailer 38 remains a testament to a period of Finnish maritime history where durability and "Sisu"—the Finnish concept of stoic determination—were the primary design specifications.
