In the mid1970s, international offshore racing was dominated by heavy, pinchedstern yachts optimized to exploit the quirks of the International Offshore Rule (IOR). This conventional wisdom was shattered in 1975 when a radical, yellowhulled prototype named "45 South" arrived at the Quarter Ton Cup in Deauville, France. Designed by a young New Zealander named Bruce Farr, the yacht was a direct evolution of his "skiffstyle" philosophy, utilizing a wide beam carried far aft and a lightdisplacement hull. To the astonishment of European competitors who initially dismissed the design as a weird dinghy incapable of surviving offshore, "45 South" won three out of four races to claim the world championship. This historic victory launched Bruce Farr’s international career and birthed the Farr 727—a production racer that proved light displacement, high ballast ratios, and flat, planninghull sections could redefine keelboat design.
