Designed by the legendary naval architect Lyle Hess as the final and most refined entry in his series of traditional cruising cutters, the Falmouth Cutter 34 is widely considered the designer’s magnum opus. While Hess gained international renown for the Bristol Channel Cutter 28 and the Falmouth Cutter 22—famously championed by voyagers Lin and Larry Pardey—the 34foot variant was a later development intended to address the demand for a more spacious, powerful oceangoer with faster passage times. The design was initially commissioned around 1982 by builder Ed McNeil, who sought a larger companion to his Canadianbuilt Bristol Channel Cutters. McNeil initiated production in South Africa, building approximately six hulls before logistics and shipping feasibility prompted him to halt operations. In 2003, woodworker and experienced singlehanded voyager Bryan Gittins acquired the exclusive rights and imported one final hull to British Columbia, Canada, before the original South African molds were destroyed. Establishing Channel Cutter Yachts in Ladysmith, Vancouver Island, Gittins built new molds from that final hull, continuing to produce these highly customized, masterpiece pocketvoyagers on a bespoke basis. With a length on deck of 34 feet and a sweeping bowsprit extending her overall length to 43 feet, this design represents a perfect marriage of timeless seaworthiness and handcrafted artistry.
