Buying a used Falmouth: confirm which boat is actually for sale

"Falmouth" isn't one builder's brand in this catalog, so the first step before evaluating any listing is confirming which boat it actually names. The boat with a documented design and build record is the Falmouth Cutter, Lyle Hess's small pocket cruiser, built by hand first in Costa Mesa, California, and later in Port Townsend, Washington. A separate pocket cruiser sold under the same name has no comparable paper trail, and Cornish working-boat traditions -- quay punts and oyster-dredging Working Boats -- explain why "Falmouth" shows up on still other boats with no builder connection at all. Once you've confirmed it's the Hess-designed cutter, you're buying a small, hand-built bluewater boat, not a mass-production yacht, and it should be evaluated on those terms.

Which era to target

The Falmouth Cutter was built in two distinct stretches: a run of 41 twenty-two-foot boats before Sam L. Morse Co. closed its doors, and the run that followed once Cape George Marine Works acquired the molds and rolled its first completed hull off them in January 2011. That handoff carries one buyer-relevant wrinkle: a Morse-era hull was laminated by an outside contractor, while every Cape George-era hull has been laid up by the yard itself -- worth knowing if you're trying to place a given boat's construction pedigree from the hull alone.

The original 22-foot Falmouth Cutter carries the documented design and construction history above; sisters marketed as the Cutter 26 and Cutter 34 extended the same Hess design to larger sizes. Verify the model and builder era behind any given listing before weighing it against others in the full model directory on this page -- and rule out, rather than assume, that a boat is connected to the Hess/Morse/Cape George lineage just because it shares the Falmouth name.
