Elan sailboats: a ski workshop's composite know-how, carried through three design eras

Elan's history reads less like one continuous boatbuilding story and more like a series of technical pivots, each one carried forward by a different partner. A ski manufacturer moved into wood, then fiberglass, then aerospace-grade composites; two long design partnerships - one racing-focused, one cruising-focused - split the lineup in two; and two ownership changes since 2015, followed by a 2025 restructuring, have reorganized the company without erasing what those partnerships built. Reading a used Elan starts with knowing which era, and which partner, produced it.

Origins and ownership

Elan was founded in 1945 by Rudi Finžgar, a Slovenian ski jumper, carpenter, and innovator, as a workshop for skis and sporting equipment in the valley above Lake Bled. Company history and Marine Business News both date the move into boatbuilding to 1949, describing small wooden craft - canoes, kayaks, and boats for the surrounding lakes; YACHT magazine's account instead places the start in the early 1950s, progressing from kayaks and small motorboats to sailing dinghies and, later, yachts. By 1962 Elan had become one of the first European yards to adopt polyester/glass composite construction, with the Elan GT 495 as that era's bestseller.

For decades Elan operated under Slovenian state ownership: state holding company SDH held a majority stake until August 2015, when Cypriot financial holding company Wiltan Enterprises, with investment bank Merrill Lynch, acquired 100 percent of the Elan Group. KJK Fund III, a EUR 250 million private equity fund launched in 2018, completed its purchase of Elan d.o.o. in May 2019, roughly nine months after work began, though some later reporting rounds the acquisition to "2018." Existing CEO Jeffrey Tirman stayed on and additionally became CEO of KJK's new holding company, KJK Sports, which grouped Elan with other outdoor-sports investments including Tahe Outdoors and Leader 96. In April 2025, Elan announced it would halt production and overhaul its company structure and portfolio, a reorganization expected to take at least 12 months; KJK Sports senior vice president Melanja Korošec cited "a very difficult and challenging market environment" as the reason. At the time the shipyard employed around 50 people.

The designers

Elan's early cruiser-racers came out of a 1983 partnership with J&J Design, the Slovenian bureau founded by brothers Japec and Jernej Jakopin, which produced the Elan 31, 33, 39, 43, and 35 Performance. The Elan 31R won the 1985 IOR 3/4 Ton Worlds, and Elan's yacht revenues grew tenfold by 1987 as a result of the partnership.

Humphreys Yacht Design has been Elan's principal designer since the mid-1990s, working alongside Elan's own in-house engineering team; the Elan 295 was the first model from that relationship, and Elan credits Humphreys as an increasingly central voice in its design direction since. Humphreys' fingerprints show up throughout the range: the hull chines used across the lineup were introduced specifically to improve righting moment and share load with the hull form, moderating how much ballast the keel carries; every hull goes through Computational Fluid Dynamic testing during design; and keel-stepped masts are standard, Humphreys-specified rigging on all E Line boats. Elan has also worked with other design studios, among them Studio F. A. Porsche, which contributed styling on newer GT-line boats.

Construction through the eras

Elan's composite ambitions predate its modern hulls by decades: in 1978 the yard pioneered vacuum epoxy and post-cured construction, later upgrading to carbon epoxy, to build hundreds of high-performance sailplanes with the German glider specialist Glaser-Dirks - an aerospace-composites detour that fed back into its boatbuilding. In the early 2000s Elan adopted Vacuum Assisted Infusion Lamination (VAIL), becoming the second European shipyard, and first serial European shipyard, to use the process, completing the shift from open-mould lamination by 2003. In the VAIL process, ISO NPG polyester resin (or vinyl ester resin as an option) is pulled through a network of distribution tubes by vacuum after the fabric and foam-core layup, then hermetically sealed and cured in a temperature-controlled environment; Elan says the process saves up to 25 percent in composite weight and improves the hull's mechanical properties compared with open-mould lamination. A further refinement, 3D VAIL, integrates the inner structure, stringers, and stringer supports directly into the hull for a one-piece laminated load-bearing structure; full 3D VAIL hull construction is used on the GT5, GT6, and GT6 Explorer, while the E5, E6, Impression 45, and Impression 50.1 receive 3D VAIL stringers, with VAIL hull and deck lamination standard across the rest of the range. Marine Business News credits Elan as the first builder to use vacuum technology molding hulls and decks, the first to fit two rudders and wheels on leisure sailboats, and the first to use chines in hull design - firsts Elan's own timeline dates to the 333 (wheel steering, 1998), the E310 (chines and double rudders, 2009), and the GT6 (a sub-50-foot flush-deck design, 2020).

Lines and generations

The J&J Design-era cruiser-racers of the 1980s gave way to a Humphreys-designed performance-cruiser line from the mid-1990s onward, and by 2006-2007 Elan's production had reached over 300 boats a year, a growth era that introduced the Elan 333, Elan 340, and Impression 344, two of which won the European Yacht of the Year award. The Elan 350 continued that momentum in 2011, winning European Yacht of the Year by a unanimous vote while carrying forward Elan's practice of moving offshore-racing features - the twin-helm configuration and hull chines - into cruising yachts. By 2015, YACHT magazine described Elan as running two production lines from its Begunje yard: Elan Yachts, performance cruisers between 21 and 45 feet, and Impression Yachts, a four-model cruising line between 35 and 50 feet, Humphreys-designed but built for comfort and volume over speed. Starting around 2020, Elan evolved toward performance-luxury yachts: the GT6 (2020) won design awards, the E6 (2021) won the International Yachting and Aviation Award, and the GT6 Explorer (2023) marked Elan's debut in bluewater cruising.

Who Elan is for

Elan suits a buyer who wants a boat from a yard that treated composite engineering as a core identity, not a marketing line - one whose vacuum-infusion process predates most competitors' and whose keel and hull-form choices trace to a single, decades-long design partnership. That fits sailors chasing the racing pedigree of the J&J and early Humphreys years as well as cruising buyers drawn to the Impression line's comfort-oriented take on the same construction. The April 2025 announcement that Elan would halt production and reorganize is a piece of the brand's recent history worth knowing before shopping the used market.

Frequently asked questions

01Who founded Elan and when?+
Rudi Finžgar, a Slovenian ski jumper, carpenter, and innovator, founded Elan in 1945 as a workshop for skis and sporting equipment in the valley above Lake Bled.
02When did Elan start building boats?+
Company history and Marine Business News both date the shift into boatbuilding to 1949, describing a range of small wooden craft - canoes, kayaks, and boats for the surrounding lakes. YACHT magazine's account instead places the start in the early 1950s, progressing from kayaks and small motorboats to sailing dinghies and, later, yachts.
03Who designs Elan sailboats?+
J&J Design, the Slovenian bureau founded by brothers Japec and Jernej Jakopin, designed Elan's early cruiser-racers starting in 1983. Humphreys Yacht Design has been the principal designer since the mid-1990s, beginning with the Elan 295, and continues to direct the hull, keel, and chine choices used across the current range; Studio F. A. Porsche has contributed styling on the newer GT-line boats.
04What is Elan's VAIL construction?+
VAIL, or Vacuum Assisted Infusion Lamination, pulls resin through a network of distribution tubes by vacuum after the fabric and foam-core layup, then cures the hull in a sealed, temperature-controlled environment; Elan says the process saves up to 25 percent in composite weight and improves mechanical properties compared with open-mould lamination. Elan completed its shift to VAIL by 2003. A further version, 3D VAIL, integrates the stringers and inner structure into the hull itself for a one-piece laminated structure, and is used in full on the GT5, GT6, and GT6 Explorer.
05Who owns Elan today?+
KJK Fund III, a Luxembourg-based private equity fund, completed its purchase of Elan d.o.o. in May 2019, and Elan is one of four brands under the KJK Sports holding company, alongside Tahe Outdoors and Leader 96. In April 2025, Elan announced it would halt production and undertake a full reorganization of its company structure and sailing yacht portfolio.
