The East Anglian 28 stands as one of the most enduring and beautiful testaments to the postwar era of British wooden yacht construction. Designed in 1957 by the prolific naval architect Alan Buchanan, the model was born out of a very specific regional challenge. A committee of yachtsmen representing the sailing clubs along the East Coast of England wanted an affordable, restricted class cruiserracer. It needed to be capable of navigating the shallow, muddy estuaries and tidal creeks of Essex and Suffolk, yet possess the robust seaworthiness required to face the short, steep, punishing chop of the North Sea. Buchanan’s response was a masterclass in moderate, traditional proportions: a deepbodied, fullkeeled sloop that quickly captured the imagination of traditionalists. Built primarily by revered yards such as William King of BurnhamonCrouch and Dixon Kerly of Maldon, approximately 70 to 100 of these pocket cruisers were launched between 1957 and 1971, marking the twilight of wooden boatbuilding before the fiberglass revolution.
