The Cheoy Lee Offshore 50 stands as a definitive monument to the era when fiberglass began to replicate the soul of traditional timber. Designed by the esteemed firm of John G. Alden (Design No. 998) and launched in the late 1960s, the Offshore 50 was the flagship of the yard's sailing fleet, embodying a "goanywhere" philosophy wrapped in the ornate Burmese teak that made the Hong Kong shipyard famous. Unlike the smaller, more nimble Offshore 31 or 40, the 50 was conceived as a true bluewater residence, offering a level of displacement and stability intended for transoceanic passages. The hull is a heavy, solidlaminate GRP structure, yet the aesthetic remains strictly classic, featuring a long keel, a graceful spoon bow, and a traditional ketch rig that splits the sail area for manageable shorthanded sailing.
