In the early 1980s, the cruising catamaran landscape was dominated by British yards experimenting with multihulls that were often viewed with suspicion by traditional yacht clubs. Amid this skepticism, Christchurchbased Tom Lack Catamarans Ltd. introduced its flagship, the Catalac 12M (also marketed as the Catalac 41), in 1983 2 3. Conceived as an uncompromisingly robust, oceanready liveaboard, the 12M was designed to offer maximum safety, massive interior volume, and stable, upright sailing. While many contemporary designs chased performance through lightweight materials, Tom Lack took the opposite approach, building a vessel with thick, handlaid solid fiberglass hulls below the waterline that earned the model a reputation as an impenetrable cruising platform.
