Buying a used Voyage: what a small, charter-bred yard means for buyers
Voyage is a small builder by design — across three decades the yard has produced only a handful of distinct catamaran models out of Cape Town, South Africa, and much of its history runs through its own charter operation, Voyage Charters, based in the British Virgin Islands. That charter pedigree matters for a used-boat search: with a lineup this compact, an individual boat's construction era and maintenance history tell a buyer more than the model name does on its own.
Which era to target
Voyage's earliest boats, including the 440, were built with hand-laid, bagged-core hulls — solid construction, but heavier than what came later. That shift toward lighter building began in 2016, when Voyage introduced hybrid-electric propulsion on the 480, and continued with the 590, which moved to an infused, closed-cell PVC foam core and quadraxial glass laminate; the newer 510 continues that infusion-built, quadraxial-glass approach. Buyers after electric-assist propulsion or the lightest available hull should look to 2016-and-later boats; buyers who'd rather avoid hybrid systems altogether may prefer the earlier, simpler generation.
What to inspect across the range
Katamarans.com has flagged low bridgedeck clearance as a recurring trait on Voyage's mid-generation cruising cats: the 480 — itself an evolution of the earlier 450 and 500 — is susceptible to slamming to windward because of it, though the reviewer noted later designs improved on the issue. Worth a specific check on a survey for any boat from that lineage.
Navigating the lineup
The range spans smaller, cruising-oriented boats like the 430 and Maxim 380 up through larger, charter-capable flagships like the 580, 590, and 510. Weighing that size-and-purpose split against a boat's construction era and condition is a better starting filter than the model number alone; the full model directory on this page breaks out the specifics.
