Buying a used Allures: an aluminum hull built for distance, not polish
Every Allures carries the same structural promise regardless of model or year: a welded aluminum hull married to a fiberglass-composite deck, built by a single Cherbourg yard for genuine offshore passage-making rather than coastal cruising. That consistency simplifies the used-boat calculus in one respect — buyers aren't choosing between fundamentally different hull philosophies across the range — but it also raises the stakes on maintenance history: yard staff describe an aluminum hull's upkeep as resting on three habits, avoiding stray electrical mass, keeping the anodes in good condition, and maintaining a proper anti-fouling paint job. A used Allures is really a bet on how disciplined the previous owner was about those three habits, not just on which model they bought.
Which era to target
The lineup falls into two clear generations, split by the 2010 takeover of Garcia Yachts — the acquisition Allures' own materials treat as the single most consequential turn in the company's history. Boats from before that point carry the original names: the 44, the 40, and the 51. The generation that followed came renamed — the 45 in place of the 44, the 52 succeeding the 51 in 2016, the 39.9 evolved from the 40 — and, according to an account from a visit to the Cherbourg factory, drew its aluminum hull shells from Garcia's own specialist fabrication. Design language moved again with the 45.9 in 2017 and the 51.9 in 2021, the latter the first Allures with an aft cabin and a long cockpit. Weighing an original-generation hull against a renamed one is as much a question of which side of the Garcia takeover a boat was built on as it is a question of layout.
Navigating the lineup
The range splits into two broad bands: a smaller cruising group around the 39.9 and 40.9, and a larger passage-making group spanning the 45, 45.9, 51, 51.9, and 52. Boats built for genuine long-distance work, like the Allures 44 that completed a Northwest Passage transit or the Allures 45 that worked the channels of Patagonia, show what the larger end of that range is built to do.
