Ta Chiao

Active: 1966 – Present

The Origin Story

The story of Ta Chiao, a name that resonates with yachting enthusiasts for its robust and ocean-capable vessels, begins in Taiwan. Founded by the Kuo family, Ta Chiao was established in Kaohsiung around 1960. In its earliest days, the company initially focused on constructing wooden fishing boats, a testament to the family's deep roots in the marine industry. This foundational experience in traditional boatbuilding laid the groundwork for their eventual pivot into the yacht market. A pivotal moment came in 1965 when Ta Chiao (also referred to as Ta Chiao Bros. Yacht Building Co.) introduced fiberglass construction techniques, marking them as a pioneer among Taiwanese boat builders and setting the stage for their global reach in yacht manufacturing. By 1966, the shipyard began specializing in larger sailing vessels.

History and Evolution

Ta Chiao's evolution in the marine industry was largely defined by its early adoption of fiberglass in the late 1960s and early 1970s, a move that positioned them at the forefront of modern yacht construction in Taiwan. Over the years, the company quickly built a strong reputation for the build quality and timeless designs of its sailing yachts, particularly its well-known CT (Chiao Tai) series. The shipyard consistently paid meticulous attention to its manufacturing processes, even adopting advanced resin infusion techniques. While the company has reportedly scaled back its production in more recent years, its enduring legacy in the yachting world remains significant.

Design Philosophy and Identity

Ta Chiao cultivated a reputation for building sturdy, ocean-capable cruising yachts, designed to withstand the rigors of bluewater passages. A defining characteristic of Ta Chiao yachts, especially those from their most prolific periods, is the luxurious teak woodwork found throughout their interiors, contributing to a classic and warm aesthetic highly sought after by owners.

The builder's identity is inextricably linked to the naval architects with whom they collaborated. Notably, many of the iconic CT series yachts were designed by the esteemed William Garden, whose designs contributed significantly to the brand's reputation for seaworthiness and timeless lines. Another prominent designer associated with Ta Chiao is Robert Perry, who notably designed the Ta Chiao CT 54.

Iconic Models and Legacy

The CT series stands as Ta Chiao's most significant contribution to the yachting world. This range encompassed a variety of sizes, catering to the burgeoning market for robust cruising yachts. Popular models within the CT series include the CT 41, the CT 48, and the CT 54, a well-regarded model known for its luxurious teak interiors and offshore capabilities. Other notable models include the CT 49, CT 56 Ketch, and the larger CT 65, which is also sometimes referred to as the Scorpio 72. The company also produced the Fantasia 35. These yachts were primarily designed for long-distance cruising, offering comfortable accommodations and reliable performance for intrepid sailors. While specific overall production numbers are not readily available, the enduring presence of these models on the used boat market speaks to their popularity and the quality of their construction.

The Builder Today

As of recent years, Ta Chiao has reportedly scaled back its production, reflecting changes in the global yacht building landscape. However, the company is still listed in some databases as an active builder since 1966. Their current offerings, as listed by some sources, include a range of motor yachts, power boats, sailing yachts, and high-class FRP boats, also providing OEM yacht design and manufacturing services with certifications. Ta Chiao boats continue to be utilized for various purposes, including overnight cruising, day cruising, and sailing. While new production may be limited, a significant number of their classic CT series yachts are still actively traded on the brokerage market, with prices varying widely depending on the model, age, and condition. The enduring presence of these vessels and discussions among owners on various forums suggest a lasting appreciation for Ta Chiao's contribution to the bluewater cruising community.
