Oyster Marine

Active: 1973 – Present

Oyster Marine, now known as Oyster Yachts, has carved out a distinguished niche in the global yachting industry, renowned for crafting some of the world's most capable and luxurious bluewater cruising yachts. With a history spanning over five decades, the British builder has consistently delivered vessels celebrated for their robust construction, exquisite craftsmanship, and timeless design.

The journey of Oyster Marine began in 1973, founded by Richard Matthews. Matthews, who initially ran a tea and coffee vending business, harbored a vision to build a racing boat. His ambition led to the creation of the company's first yacht, the UFO 34. This vessel, an IOR 3/4 ton racer designed by the acclaimed naval architecture firm Holman & Pye, was molded by Colvic and then finished and sold by Oyster Marine. The UFO 34 laid the groundwork for what would become a hallmark of Oyster Yachts: a commitment to performance coupled with practical design.

History and Evolution

From its inception, Oyster Marine steadily evolved, responding to the demands of discerning sailors. A significant design shift occurred around 1980 when the distinctive deck saloon cruiser became a kind of trademark for the brand Overview. This feature, offering panoramic views and abundant natural light, quickly became a signature element of Oyster yachts, enhancing comfort and liveability on long voyages.

The company embraced fiberglass as its primary construction material, allowing for robust and high-quality hulls essential for bluewater cruising. Over the years, Oyster has undergone corporate changes to solidify its position. In 2012, Dutch investment company HTP Investments BV acquired Oyster Marine Ltd.. More recently, in 2018, entrepreneur Richard Hadida acquired Oyster Yachts, taking on the role of owner and chairman and steering the company into a new era of growth and innovation.

Design Philosophy and Identity

Oyster Yachts holds a stellar reputation in the sailing world, recognized for producing luxury bluewater yachts and comfortable family cruisers that are ideal for liveaboard sailing. The brand is synonymous with "uncompromising strength of construction," meticulous attention to detail, and exquisite craftsmanship.

Key to Oyster's enduring appeal are its signature design features, most notably the iconic deck saloon and the distinctive "seascape windows" that flood the interior with light and offer expansive views. These features are integral to the Oyster DNA, combining aesthetic appeal with practical functionality.

Throughout its history, Oyster has collaborated with leading naval architects and designers to bring its visions to life. Early designs were often from Holman & Pye Overview, 25. As the company grew, it partnered with other respected firms, including J&J Design and Stephen Jones Overview, 30. A pivotal relationship began in 1997 with Rob Humphreys, who became the lead designer and naval architect for Oyster Yachts. Humphreys' articulate design work has been instrumental in perfecting the Oyster brand, designing many of its iconic models, including the Oyster 56 and Oyster 62, and continuing to shape its aesthetic and performance standards.

Iconic Models and Legacy

Oyster's legacy is built upon a fleet of highly successful and influential models that have graced oceans worldwide. While specific production numbers for all models can vary, the impact of yachts like the Oyster 56, 62, and later the 655, all designed by Rob Humphreys, has been significant. These yachts cemented Oyster's reputation for safe, comfortable, and capable bluewater cruisers.

Currently, Oyster Yachts produces a range of models, including the Oyster 495, 565, 595, 675, 745, and 885GT. The Oyster 595, in particular, has seen strong sales, demonstrating the continued appeal of the brand's designs. These various lines cater to different needs within the luxury cruising segment, from more compact cruisers to expansive superyachts.

Beyond individual models, Oyster has fostered a unique legacy through initiatives like the Oyster World Rally. This exclusive event brings together Oyster owners from across the globe for an organized circumnavigation, highlighting the yachts' bluewater capabilities and fostering a strong sense of community among owners.

The Builder Today

Under the ownership of Richard Hadida since 2018, Oyster Yachts remains a prominent force in the luxury sailing market. The company continues to position itself as a leading brand for blue water luxury vessels, continually striving to gain market share. Oyster's production facilities are located in the south and east of England, where modern production techniques are married with traditional boat-building craftsmanship.

Modern Oyster yachts appeal to sailors seeking exceptional comfort, robust construction, and reliable performance for extended cruising and circumnavigations. The ownership experience is highly valued, extending beyond the purchase of a yacht to include a vibrant and supportive owner community. Oyster actively encourages this through events, regattas, and the highly anticipated Oyster World Rally, where owners forge lifelong friendships and share unforgettable sailing adventures. This strong community spirit underscores Oyster's commitment not just to building boats, but to enabling a global sailing lifestyle.
