The Westerly 22 is a foundational vessel in the history of fiberglass yacht production, serving as the debut model for the UKbased Westerly Marine Construction. Launched in 1963 and designed by Commander Denys Rayner, the boat was a pioneer in the application of Glass Reinforced Plastic (RP) for small family cruisers. It was designed to be rugged, capable of handling the choppy waters of the English Channel, and famously utilitarian. While the builder "Westerly Marine Inc." of Santa Ana, California, shares the name and a later start date, the Westerly 22 remains an exclusively British design that launched the massive European success of the Westerly brand. Its hallmark is the "bilge keel" or twinkeel configuration, which allows the boat to stand upright on its own keels when the tide goes out, making it an ideal choice for the shallow estuaries and tidal harbors of the United Kingdom and Northern Europe.
