Van de Stadt sailboats: a design office, not a single yard
Van de Stadt is a Dutch design name rather than a conventional production builder. The boats that carry it were built by several different shipyards — Dehler in Germany, Trintella Shipyard and Winner Yachts in the Netherlands, Etap in Belgium — and, for long stretches of the office's history, by amateur builders working directly from stock plans. Understanding a Van de Stadt sailboat means understanding which of those builders actually built it, in which material, and to which era of the design office's own construction thinking.
Origins and ownership
Naval architect E.G. "Ricus" van de Stadt set up his own business in Zaandam, Netherlands, in 1933. His early opportunity came from an unlikely direction: Bruynzeel, a Zaandam manufacturer that had just developed a new waterproof plywood, commissioned him to design a series-production daysailer to prove the material out. The result, the 1939 Valk, showed the plywood was sound boatbuilding material and set the tone for an office willing to design around new materials as they appeared. Yachting Monthly later credited van de Stadt as one of the pioneers in designing boats for glassfibre construction, and placed him in the vanguard of developing the canoe-body hull form and the "fin and skeg" configuration that separated the rudder from a keel shortened into a fin. Over more than eighty years, the office's design catalog grew to 342 designs spanning 15 to 108 feet, sold as complete packages with drawings and calculations; from 1973 onward each new design carried its own standardized calculations backed by towing-tank testing, and the office's own account puts total production at more than 50,000 yachts built to its designs.
Construction through the eras
Van de Stadt's plywood work continued past the Valk: the 1949 Zeevalk, a 12-metre plywood ocean racer, applied his fin-keel and spade-rudder philosophy and won its class at the 1951 Fastnet Race, while the 1951 Juno became the first hard-chine cabin cruiser designed specifically for do-it-yourself amateur construction — the same year van de Stadt began selling stock plans directly to home builders. The 1955 Stern dinghy was the office's first GRP production design, with total production exceeding 3,000 boats, and the 1959 Pionier followed as, in the design office's own words, the first and possibly most influential GRP production cabin cruiser-racer in Europe. Yachting Monthly corroborates the Pionier's importance, tracing it to van de Stadt's long association with Southern Ocean Shipyard in Poole, where the boat was moulded by Tylers of Kent and fitted out by SOS; a longer Pionier followed roughly a decade later, and a standard-production example built in 1965 was sailed single-handed around the world by Herman Jansen in 1972. Construction technique kept evolving through the design office's later decades: 1984 brought a multi-chine quick-assembly method for DIY steel and aluminium building, introduced on the Van de Stadt 34, and 1988 brought a glass-fibre wood-core system, first applied to the round-bilge Flying Fish, giving builders an easier route to a round-bilge hull with GRP-like characteristics. Across the decades, van de Stadt's designs were built in nearly every material available to yacht construction: GRP, composite, glass-fiber wood core, aluminum, steel, wood, plywood, titanium, and even ferrocement.
The designs and their builders
The Dehler relationship began as friendship: Willi Dehler and his wife Edith met Ricus van de Stadt, designer of the Stern dinghy they had just bought, when they traveled to Holland to collect it. Dehler's first boat, the 1963 Winnetou, started as a home-built copy of that same Van de Stadt-designed club dinghy before Willi Dehler commissioned Ricus directly for his next keelboat, the Varianta, which came out of its mould in 1965. Van de Stadt's own history and an independent Australian sailing account both credit him as the Varianta's designer; the design office's account puts total Varianta production at roughly 4,000 boats and calls it the most successful family cruiser it ever produced. Van de Stadt was commissioned again for Dehler's following keelboat, the Optima, a trailerable cruiser built for Baltic conditions, before Dehler took over the Van de Stadt shipyard outright and renamed it Dehler-Yachtbouw. The Trintella relationship ran on a similar track: it began in 1959, when Dutch shipyard owner Anne Wever asked Ricus van de Stadt to design a cabin cruiser for Dutch inland and coastal waters, launched at HISWA Amsterdam that year after the first steel hull arrived at the shipyard in 1958. When van de Stadt drew a polyester version of that original steel Trintel, Wever gave the new generation the Trintella name in 1964, and van de Stadt served as the brand's fixed in-house architect for decades before the shipyard's 1992 sale brought in a different architect for the first time in 35 years; the later Trintella C, built in the yard's final phase before it closed in 2002, was designed by Ron Holland rather than van de Stadt, though built on the hull of the earlier Trintella A series. Beyond these two production relationships, the design office's line-defining achievements ran to outright performance: the 1960 Stormvogel, an ultra-light maxi racer in cold-moulded diagonal wood, won the 1961 Fastnet Race; the 1969 Ocean 71 was the largest GRP production boat in the world at the time, and the first of 22 built won the two-handed Round Britain Race by two days; and in 1977 Naomi James became the first woman to circumnavigate the globe single-handed, sailing a Van de Stadt-designed Gallant 53.
Who Van de Stadt is for
Van de Stadt suits buyers who are comfortable evaluating an individual boat rather than a standardized product line — the same design was executed by production yards, semi-custom builders, and amateur builders working from purchased plans, and quality tracks the builder more than the drawing. It rewards sailors drawn to a genuine offshore pedigree, from Fastnet-winning racing designs to circumnavigations completed aboard production Pioniers and a Gallant 53, and to construction programs built specifically for steel, aluminum, or plywood self-builders. It is a less natural fit for buyers who want the consistency and easy model-to-model comparison of a single production factory.
