In the early 1980s, the massproduction giant Bayliner sought to shed the "floating condominium" reputation of its slow, highvolume Buccaneer sailing line. To pivot toward the lucrative racercruiser market, the builder established the US Yachts division. The pinnacle of this transition was the US 33, a masthead sloop with an overall length of 32.83 feet introduced in 1981. Rather than starting from a blank drafting table, US Yachts utilized the existing hull molds of the Chaser 33—a competitive ThreeQuarter Ton class racer designed by legendary naval architect Doug Peterson. This maneuver occurred without authorized licensing or royalty payments, creating a highly controversial backstory for a boat that possessed purebred International Offshore Rule (IOR) pedigree. By pairing this highperformance racing hull with a new, simplified deck mold and a more accommodating interior, US Yachts produced a fast, capable cruiserracer designed to appeal to budgetconscious sailors who refused to compromise on velocity.
