The Nautor 50, more famously referred to among classic yacht circles as the Swan 50 MS (Motorsailer), represents a rare and fascinating divergence in the storied lineage of Oy Nautor AB. Built in Finland between 1976 and 1978, this highly exclusive cruiser was conceived during an era when the shipyard was globally dominant in the ocean racing scene, particularly with its Sparkman & Stephensdesigned Admiral's Cup contenders. Seeking to capture the growing market of affluent, longdistance voyagers who prioritized weather protection and massive range over racecourse silverware, Nautor commissioned Sparkman & Stephens to design a true premium motorsailer. The result was S&S Design No. 2007: a robust, goanywhere ketch that successfully wedded Swan’s uncompromising construction standards with heavydisplacement cruising capabilities. Only nine of these hulls were completed before Nautor sold the molds to Siltala Yachts, where the design was modified to become the foundational hull for the successful Nauticat 52.
